I've had two Explorers so far and I think they are great. If you are thinking on fuel economy forget it (around 22 mile per gallon with six cylinders) although I also own an Azera that is even worst. Anyways, Ford knows SUVs (not much about cars) and the Explorer (2000 and up) with its independent suspension system has overcome the rollover tendency that plagued it years before, although some of the fault was in the tires. Explorers are comfortable with easy handling that can turn on a dime. I fully recommend them.

I have a 1999 Ford Explorer 4wd, I got it 8 years ago, brand new, and I love it!! I haven't had any significant problems with mine, although I get it serviced regularly. My only gripe really is with the rear window wiper. It only cleans half of the window, so you might want to consider getting the arm replaced. Otherwise happy motoring ;0)

I have a 98 4.0 SOHC XLT. Great truck, have driven the crap out of it and it still keeps going. Reasonable on fuel not great but then its a big vehicle.
I blew the alternator a few months ago and had to replace it but the alternator was 9 years old so it didnt owe the truck anything.
I like them.

The only complaint I ever had with the Explorer was fuel economy, the Blazer was better on gas but it was not as nice to drive or ride in and the Blazer is a POS that is expensive to fix.

They are crap. Transmission repairs are very common and expensive. The SOHC engine sucks big time. A friend has a 2001 Explorer and had so many problems with it. I suggest getting a 4 Runner or Pathfinder.

i could be very at risk of noticeably think of roughly advertising the entire truck as spares or upkeep: it truly is in simple terms no longer properly worth spending the money on. whilst you're waiting to swap an engine your self & you need to discover a used one low priced adequate, then that ought to artwork out to be value-useful, yet be careful - they do no longer seem to be that stable & i could want to be certain the engine in a motor vehicle & working beforehand of parting with any funds.. seek for blue smoke (valve publications) and hear for timing chain rattle - this could ensue at very low miles.
