I realize what I'm about to say is a little bit foreign. Bear with me a second.
I believe in God, but not as a "being" exactly. He's more like a verb than a noun. Every force in the universe has a counterforce. This is not only so in some religions, it is also called Physics. Everything has an opposite.
What you do (both posative and negative)comes back to you in some form for this very reason. If God would disappear or never was, and the universe was still here, I guess there is still a reason to be civil.

That's a funny question, because there are a lot of "mean sadistic, evil , cheating murderous" people who currently believe in god, so what would change if they found out there was NO god, would they just be worse?
I already believe that there is no god, and know many other atheists who are nice, moral, ethical people.
What I want to know is when will more people realize that being a good, decent person is choice we all need to make regardless of the existence of god and some threat of hell?

Atheists don't believe in god and they don't go out killing every person in sight. The prison population for murders is 99% christian. Thus god fearing christians are killing other people... So god has no effect on the murder fate and how we treat people.
But then, I am wrong, because I have met some atheist that are very nice people. Then the god fearing christians are rude and mean because the try to shove their beliefs down your throat.
God must make people meaner.

Only if that were the basis for being good in the first place. Look at how many mobsters believe in God. It wasn't God keeping them in line.
When I acknowledged being an agnostic, I think I became a little better because I had to employ reason to all aspects of my life.

If fear of the boogey man is the only thing keeping some people from committing crime and chaos, then those people have no ethics to begin with.
Do we need "God" to be "good people"? Maybe some do, if they have no concept of self-responsibility and no foresight of physical consequences to their own actions. But honestly I don't think even most theists fall into that category.

I KNOW there is no god. The only time I ever get mean is when idiotic religionists imply that because I don't believe in god I somehow have to be a half-mad raging immoral animal.

I think I'd finally annihilate myself. The presence of God is the basis of my church. Without God, there is no basis, no church and no reason to continue.
If I am not serving God in any form, I don't have a purpose.

If the above were true I think for the most part I would remain as I am. Perhaps I might indulge a thing or two.
