I have a 1988 Ford Ranger V6 2.9L Standard Cab. I have noticed here within the past few weeks that the price of gas in my car is changing. Yes I know that the gas prices are constantly changing but what I mean is the amount that I put in my truck. Here about 2 weeks ago I my gas gauge was RIGHT ON THE EMPTY MARK so I filled it completely up for $25 then about a week later it said it had half a tank and that I filled it up for $20 then I filled it up the other day for $20 when it was at 1/4 of a tank left. My guess was that my gas gauge is messed up, so I started calling body shops and mechanics and they said that I would need to replace the sending unit. My local Ford Dealer said it would be a $161 dollar part, and it came with the fuel pump as well. Well I have a LMC Truck magazine and the same part is $119.95
Ok next one of the body shops that I talked to said it would need a sending unit but he also said something about there is another sending unit in the gas tank, and that has

got me confused as to what part I am supposed to buy!!! Can anyone help me out? I need to know what the correct part to buy is and where to get it and how much it will cost. Advance Auto Parts offers a sending unit without the fuel pump and it goes in the gas tank. The price of this item is $118.88 Also any additional information as to how to do it will be greatly appreciated!

There is only one sending unit on your truck and it's in the tank, What is happening is the Gage in the tank that measures the gas is not working properly and needs your attention, You can change it its simple Just make sure the tank is low or out of gas, hope this helps.

The part you need is a pump and sender assembly, Ford E8TZ-9H307-BA. List price is $201.73, Mitchell time to install it is 1.6 hours and be sure to replace the fuel filter since it is getting a new pump, that way if it does fail they can't deny the warranty on it. As far as the aftermarket parts go, avoid them, aftermarket fuel pumps are junk although you can buy the sending unit from NAPA separately, it is number BK 2003339 at $129.11 list price.

I'm sure there will be more answers for your question here. Just flat out ask the dealership if you also have a sending unit inside the fuel tank. The difference is, half of your trucks were made in Canada, the others were made here in the U.S.

the sending unit is in the tank, and it is $120, and you must drop the tank or remove the bed(prevents you from having to drain the fuel)

although your vehicle is pretty new try going to a salvage yard as this could save yourself $100 and it is almost certainly the tank sender you need
