In Spanish nouns are masculine or feminine.
ex. feminine-escuela
ex. masculine-colegio
So depending on what noun you are saying you use different letters at the end of a word.*
When using an article or adjective to modify a noun you use the same gender as the noun.
ex. feminine-una escuela
ex. masculine- un colegio
*note* when talking about someone lets say, John, you choose gender based on the gender of the person.
ex. John es muy bajo
^_^ I hope that helped

In Spanish "a" at the end of a word is used when a feminine word is used like: una mujer = a women or on the other hand un hombre = a man (no a there at the end of the word). Usually the substantives that end with an a are feminine and then you use the following adjective ending with an a like: Una mujer bonita. But there are exceptions and you just have to learn them. One example is: un problema, you could think that is a feminine word ending with an a, but it´s a masculine word, so if you want to say a big problem in Spanish, you have to say: un problema grande. You just have to learn and read Spanish, that´s the only way to learn. Good luck!

Usually you use an "a" at the end of a word in spanish for a feminine form. Not all words ends with an "a" is feminine like el mapa, el agua, etc. is masculine. And la foto, la moto, and etc. are feminine.
Un chico- A boy
Una chica- A girl
Un chico estupido. - A stupid boy
Una chica estupida- A stupid girl.

You use "una" when the next word ends in an "a"
Example: "Una Mochilla"
And you use "un" for the others.
Example:"un lapiz"
"a" at the end means it's feminine and "o" means it's masculine.
Example:
El Profesor (a man teacher)
La Profesora ( a woman teacher)
So just remember those and you'll get the hang of it..

"a" is usually indicative of femininity, where "o" is usually an indication of masculinity. (An exception is "la mano" - "la" being feminine but the "o" indicating masculine).
"a" is only used where something or a group is feminine. If there is one male in a group you would say "estupidos" whereas if it was ALL female it would be "estupidas".
Anything ambiguous is masculine.
Those are the rules - GENERALLY speaking.

all words ending "-ista" could be the two masculine or female dependinng while you're describing a guy or a woman communista, periodista, etc., el defensa (male soccer participant) comparable with indigena, azteca, inca, maya words ending "ma" programa, sistema, estrategema mapa, dia there are possibly some greater words that bring about "a" yet start up with a under pressure "a" or "ha" recieve the masculine article even inspite of the incontrovertible fact that they are truly female "el agua fria" "el aguila blanca" "el hambre vieja" i don't be attentive to the thank you to jot down the accents in right here .

Easy, words that end with "a" in Spanish refer to the female, while "o" (and sometimes "e") refer to the male.
ESTÚPIDO - stupid male
ESTÚPIDA - stupid female
Hope it's useful!
