I would like to get a puppy for my daughter. I have decided against a Jack Russel as I am concerned for our guinea pigs, Yorkshire Terriers look cute and are about the right size but, have 'Terrier' in their title - will a Yorkie poise a threat to the GPs'? The GP's are securely kept in a run.

The 'No's' have it I'm afraid. Am looking into getting a King Charles Spaniel now. Thanks everyone. :-)

A Yorkie might not be the best choice as originally they were bred to hunt rats and might consider your guinea pig to be a rodent.

No, a yorkie won't hurt a gp. The yorkie might bark a lot at them, but, as long as they have a big cage and it's high enough, the gps will be fine!

Yorkies are high energy dogs. They are also good watchdogs, so like I said, they will probably bark at the gps. If this happens, I would recommend putting the dog in a different room then the gps are in. This way, the gps will feel safe!

I hope that this helps! Good Luck!

If the GP's are kept in a contained area, where the dog won't get to them, they'll be OK. But be careful, because all terriers were bred to hunt small animals, etc. So even a little yorkie might want to get them. Try looking on petfinder.com for a yorkie. There are tons of cute ones there!

I have had a Yorkie for six years now, and he has never once shown aggression to any other living creature. Tiny Tim does have the sweetest personality, which most Yorke's have, but it truly depends on the personality of your dog. He has been in very close surroundings with my friends guinea pig, and only smelled it a few times. He has also come in close contact with my bunnies and was very well behaved.

I definitely suggest you should get a Yorkie, it will definitely bring joy and excitement to your life.
I hope this helps!

I have to disagree with the majority of the answers. I own three yorkie's and will never own another breed. My smallest is 1 year old now and weighs 2 1/2 lbs. They are wonderful dogs and mine would be more scared of a guinea pig then want to hurt it. It's all how you raise a dog that matters.

Any dog could terrorize the GP if he is allowed to. Put GP up and make sure that the dog can't get close to the cage. Remember tho if GP makes a run for it, he is likely to be dinner.

The Yorkie will definately terrorize the GP. Mine chase anything that can move. Mice, birds, snakes. My littlest one is ruthless. She'll stalk them like a cat, and she is super fast

Don't worry its ok, aslong as the dog isn't aggressive. I have a yorkie myself and my friend has a hamster and when my yorkie saw it she got excited but no harm was done.

Nah, if you raise it right, if you dont teach it to kill or anything like it then it wont be vicious, i have a yorkie and i also have a rabbit, a few months ago my rabbit was sick and my yorkie was trying to kiss it better, and thats because i never taught it to kill, just get a yorkie puppy and it will grow up to be a kind non-vicious dog! :D

I would not trust the yorkie as they were bred to hunt vermin.
