Sphygmus - pulse
manometer - measurer of pressure

So...sphygmomanometer - measurer of pulse pressure (which, of course, in medical-ese means specifically the difference between systolic, or peak, pressure and diastolic, or lowest, pressure measured).

The stethoscope is necessary to auscultate (or hear) the changes in sounds as blood is initially allowed to flow through the blood vessel as pressure in the sphygmomanometer falls (correlating with systolic pressure) and then as the character of the sound changes as the blood flows more and more easily as the pressure in the sphygmomanometer falls further. If taking blood pressure manually, both instruments are necessary.

3 years ago, I was diagnosed - hypertension with a reading of 160/100. I used to feel dizzy a lot, my legs had awful cramps, and levels were very low in my potassium, causing my fingers and toes to always cramp together. One day I started to feel really faint while I was driving with my daughter in the back seat and I passed out, hitting 3 cars and ending up in a ditch. That moment,I knew I had to do something because my meds weren't working. I heard about this diet from a friend and thought I'd give it a shot. The results have been remarkable. In just 21 days, I honestly can't remember feeling this good, my blood pressure went from 175/110 to 125/70.

sphygmomanometer or blood pressure cuff.
pressure is applied to artery through the cuff to achieve
approx. 200 mm hg and gradually released by
a valve. the first sound heard throught the stethescope is
believed to be the systolic bp and at the point the sound is gone is believed to be the diastolic pressure.

A sphygmomanometer. Sphygmos is Greek for pulse. Doesn't quite fit, does it? Until you realize that manometer is an instrument for measuring pressure or tension.

In addition to the sphygmomanometer, we can use an oscillometric BP machine, or an intra-arterial line.

It's called a "blood pressure monitor." A stethoscope doesn't take blood pressure, it measures your heartbeat.
