Absolutely. 30-45 minutes of daily rigorous exercise has been shown to have similar effects to that of antidepressant medication. Exercise releases serotonin into the brain, which is a neurotransmitter that serves as a mood stabilizer, and is the chemical that is targeted by most of our antidepressants.
Also commit to a healthy diet. Eating unhealthily or emotional eating (eating because you're sad) can adversely affect your mood, and make you feel worse. Antidepressants are a relatively new invention because Americans have become more of a society that has demanded the quick-fix, but a commitment to a lifestyle change can have great effects on your mood. Best of luck to you.

No there is not a way to beat depression. Medication is a mood stabilizer. It is what you use to control depression. You cannot be healthy without that medication. Take it. As for your partner, I would say goodbye. Get your child support and move on. If he wants his freedom nothing you do or say is going to bring him back. If he does return to your life, then you have the problem of when will he leave the next time and the time after that. Talk to your doctor about medications and side effects like dependence. Talk to a lawyer about child support. Get your life going in the right direction and enjoy it.

I read your questions and some of the answers that follow and I fear that you are making an excuse/excuses to not take what may well be life saving medication(s) to get your depression under control. I am rather appalled when I look at today's society that takes an either/or approach to the treatment of depression. Either treat depression with medication or not. My personal experience was that I could not overcome my depression without a combination of medication and therapy BOTH.
Yes, there are things I do on a daily basis to beat depression to be sure. I share my experience, strength, and hope with others. I work out to increase my strength, boost my self esteem, and release endorphins. But I also take steps on a daily basis to work on serotonin and norepinephrine through medications and utilize the things I learned in therapy. More than one person has lost the fight against depression by not taking medication. Just be careful that you aren't making an excuse to take medication when you really need it.

i'm not sure whether or not i had depression but i sure as hell got though a really bad patch without the use of medication.
I guess it all depends on the depression and the person. If its teenage angst then hell its all about time and patience. Death and trauma can be tricky. I lost my mum to breast cancer nearly 3 years ago and i was offered drugs and asked if i wished to see a shrink but i chose my own path. With the help of friends (or just one) and taking one day at a time you can beat depression. I still have down days, but i know what i've got in life. When i'm ever down i write poems, draw pictures or just mosh and scream to a song! Two years back i was down, isolated and downtroden. I'm now in a stable relationship, passed college with a diploma in my hand and my future waiting for me to grab it.
Depression doesnt have to be a final curtain, think of it as a learning curve to finding what you really love in life

Many people have chosen not to medicate themselves and opt for cognitive therapies- with great results. Doctors tried putting me on anti-depressants right after I got divorced but I declined and chose to see a therapist. It helped greatly! I looked forward to my appointments because I could talk, cry, whatever I needed to do, and she would listen, not interrupt, and provide educated insight into what I was feeling- and what I could do to take care of myself and move on. When I felt like myself again, I ended the sessions. I would recommend seeking out non-medicated options, use that as a last resort. You might need it but why do it if you don't need to? Way too many people take pills if you ask me.

There are lots of people that beat depression without medication. Cognitive Behavior Therapy is used with high rates of success for treating depression. I'm including a link below to one of the best books out on the subject.

Yes! I got to the point were I thought to myself, I am so fed up with being fed up/depressed! I started to look at the things in my life that were going right for me rather than the things going wrong! I also started to think to myself of others that were in worse situations than myself! I was in Romania last year doing some volunteer work and when you see the poverty, orphaned children, homeless and people barely scraping by you think of how selfish you are to be unhappy with your own lifestyle! I taught myself to start appreciating the good things in my life and to start accepting the bad or doing something to change it if possible!
Just remember that there is always others worse of than yourself how ever hard that might be to believe! I also found that volunteering at a local club was good for me! I was around disadvantaged children and focused on helping them! This was great for my confidence and I made lots of new friends!
I hope this was of some help to you!

Yes,but you have to be really strong to stop the medication and find little things in life that can make you happy...of course it's not completely gone....I feel depressed at least once a day..but I keep smiling and trying...drugs make it even worse!

YES!!! excercise has shown to be a very effective way to beat depression. I'm talking, a 30 minute walk everyday, some simple weight lifting ( like curls), dance arobics, swimming, jogging, whatever it is that you find you enjoy. Just make sure to do it everyday.
Good luck!!

Yeah... Just wait it out and try not to let it get you. People that have depression let it beat them.. when really you need to beat it. I know what your going through, and no one knew I had it. I was so alone. But I just fought back and now I'm better than ever. Just keep your head up and tell yourself your great.

*Raises hand*
It has been 3 years since I had a depression episode. Used to have them every 3 or so months. It is hard, but if you know all the tricks it works. If you want to know them ask me. It is a long list.
