What is the definition of the phrase "clinicaly dead"?

There are clinical signs that a physician looks for when he checks whether someone is alive or not. These include heartbeat, spontaneous respiration, response of the pupils to light etc. Someone is clinically dead if the clinical signs confirm death but unwary physicians may occasionally be misled as there are conditions associated with very low metabolic rates in which the patient may appear clinically dead but may recover or may be resuscitated. Sedative overdoses, drowning in cold water are two conditions which come to mind but there are probably others.

Clinically dead means "practically dead for all intents and purposes" using the medical profession's "clinic'"or hospital standards that measure body temperature, pulse, breathing, heartbeat, or even brain activity. A person is clinically dead when the above readings are so low or at a point there is no practical possibility that a person will be able to recover to live a normal life or existence. For example, a person may be just alive - breathing or releasing bowels, or being fed intravenously - buy whose brain does not exhibit any activity whatsoever so much so it does not direct the muscles tor the motor system to make any motion or movement. This is especially true in a situation where the individual is in what is called vegetative state. The term "clinically dead' seems to have been coined as a defense by the medical profession for a proposed action to take out any life support to a person
without the need to say that person is actually, already dead. Clinically dead as a term is actually saying, "based on accepted body tests .... the person is practically dead!"
