I'm interested in buying a four wheeler, something fairly cheap. I saw the Yamaha Wolverine 350 and I really liked it, but I was wondering how important 4WD is. I have driven 2WD quads before without a problem, but that was in Arizona. In the Northeast the conditions are pretty different.

It depends on what you plan on doing with the ATV. If you plan on climbing hills, 4WD would be better. 2WD quads are better for playing around in fields.

As the owner of three ArticCats I say that 4 wheel drive is important. The first one that I bought was a 300 and 2WD that was a mistake......you can get stuck in something as simple as mud without 4WD....not to mention if you plan on doing some mountain or serious off roading. The last 2 I purchased were ArticCats a 400 and a 650 both with 4WD....I reccommend that be the only way to go in whatever brand you decide to purchase. You may need it more than you think!! I know I did.

That depends on where you are going to be using it and how you are going to be using it. The terrain where you use it will determine that.
Just be careful. I went to a good friend's funeral last month. He was killed on a four wheeler.
A month before that a girl I know had a good friend of her's killed on a four wheeler.
Those things will throw you when you least expect it.

And in both cases they were stone cold sober when they were killed, nor were they hot rodding.

Addtitonal information:
They were both experienced riders with years of experience having ridden ATV from back in the days of the three wheelers.

For me 4X4 is a must when it comes to ATV's. I have a Yamaha Burin 350 4X4. I use my 4WD quite a bit acutally and I live in the Southeast. Lots of mud and slick hills. I'd buy a 4X4, it's a lot better.

I consider it essential. How can you have an ATV (ALL Terrain vehicle) if it's not 4WD? Those 2WD models are more like those beach cruiser bikes with only one speed and coaster brakes. Good for their purpose but nothing else whatsoever.

If you're going to have any kind of mud/snow/slush/foresty stuff, 4WD will be 100 times more useful.

Depends what you want it for...
Compare it to cars...
4WD...Mud, slow, rocks, slow uphills...
2WD...Sand, fast,
POLARIS has AWD...which is MUCH better than any 4WD.
On 4WD if you lift one wheel, that's the one that gets the power.
On AWD you can lift 3 wheels and the one still touching will be the one with the power.
I have a 2006 Polaris X2 500cc and I LOVE it.

It ALL depends on you, the rider. How experianced are you? What type of terain? Sand and hard pack, no need. Snow and rock, no need unless you do not know how to ride. I would not recomend 4X4 on a quad unless you are using it to hunt and need to haul a large animal out of the hills, or you like going slow.

Not needed at all. Unless of course you plan to do anything off road.

The question is more like, "How important are my arms and legs to me?"
