Is there anything in these numbers that identifies them as either a debit or credit card?

Yes, usually it the first couple of digits of the card that show the type.

The first character being 4 is a Visa Card, 5 for a Master Card and 6 for a debit card.

Just by looking at the card numbers there is not anything that would identify them as a debit or credit card. But, internally the bank that issues the card will know the type of card it is.

However, a debit card will have the word "debit" somewhere on the card.

the first 8 on most cards are the cards information. you could probaly tell from the first 4 digits. the last 8 is to identify each customer. At my job we always use the last 4 digits to indentify a paid customer

Its the FIRST few digits that identify the bank ..

(the last 8 are your account number :-) )
