My family has a camp on a small lake. The water is spring feed and very clean. Growing up we never had any problems with leeches. For 26 years I had never even seen one while swimming. However within the last three years we have been finding them and a few family members have even got them on their bodies. If you have any fixes for the problem (that wouldn't hurt other wildlife in the lake) or any ideas why suddenly we are developing the problem I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you.

Occasionally leeches can become a nuisance if their abundance becomes too high. More commonly, leeches are a pest to people swimming or wading in the pond.

Apparently only one product, Copper Sulfate Pentahydrate (EPA Registration Number 35896-19, Agtrol Chemical Products) is registered for leech control in farm ponds in some states, but not in North Carolina. However, you should always check your state laws to make sure it is legal to posses and dispense. A concentration of 5 parts per million (ppm) is recommended.

But, leeches ARE wildlife in the lake! Whatever you do to them will not be environmentally friendly.

You could try to introduce some fish(use ones local to the appropriate area) into the lake?

call a control place and ask them to poisone the water to make the leeches go away and then after it clears up your family can swim and fish again
