When I took my daughter's pacifier, I just took it. Cold Turkey. It was tough, but only lasted for a little while. And she was seriously addicted to that thing. She was 7 or 8 months, though, and was biting it and I was afraid she would bite off a piece and choke on it. I never had one as a baby.

I heard you can tell you child there is a pacifier fairy, or some name like that. And that she wants to give the child's pacifiers to new babies. And that you and the child are going to collect all the pacifiers up and leave them in a bag outside for the new babies. And then the next morning the child opens the door, and in place of the bag is a new toy. And that the child never asks for them again.

We did the pacifier fairy with our daughter. We got balloons and tied the pacifiers to the balloons and let her let the balloons go and told her that when the pacifier fairy got the pacifiers, that she would get a present. So the next morning when she got up, there was a present waiting for her!
She was about 3 and had to give up the pacifiers because it was interfering with her teeth- they were not coming down far enough to meet.

I never had one, but both of my children did. My son at 2 'traded' his for a tricycle, because we told him that if he was old enough for the trike, then he was too old for a pacifier - which he only used in bed. He even handed it to the store clerk when we bought his trike! That was so funny. He had no problem without it. My daughter, on the other hand, would sneak hers out of the crib. She used it at home until she was about 3 when I took her picture sucking on it while she was watching tv. I think she was embarassed! Shortly after it got lost (really) and I never replaced it. She never made a fuss about it. Now at 24, she has a daughter and hates the things and wouldn't let the baby use one. Hmmm. People are funny.

my 2 year old twins recently had the dummy fairy come and take them...... I made a big deal about them being big kids, and the dummy fairy is gonna come and take them and bring you a present. They couldn't possibly sleep in a big bed with a baby dummy....... so soon after the dummy fairy came and took them and brought toys, they moved into big beds from their cots. They only asked for the dummies a couple of times.....you just have to be tough...."we haven't got any1 The dummy fairy took them when she broguht you toys!...Sorry! All gone!" They'll get over it if you are consistent....giving in is the worst thing you can do... you've set a precedent that the situation can always be reversed if they carry on long enough. You might need to explain that the dummy fairy rang you..... she said there are new fairy babies that don't have dummies, and the fairy thinks you are a big kid now and shereally needs you to give your dummies for the new fairy babies! She will bring you something to swap for it, but you can never never have your dummies back after that!
I guess it really depends how old your child is too.... you didn't say! When my kids were about 1 we made the rule that dummies are for bedtime, and if they insisted on a dummy, they had to go in their cots, and could only get out if they left their dummy in the cot. Because we did it in stages, and made such a fuss about them being big kids, it really wasn't that hard! Good luck!

I don't remember how mine ws taken away as that was awhile ago... My daughter was a pill about hers. I tried to tkae cold turkey, but we were so miserable so at about 20 months I started slowly snipping off the end of the nipple (like a mm at a time) until there was nothing left. It worked, and it was a hoot watching her walk around with that pacifier nub in her mouth! My son is way more laid back. One day I just couldn't find it and that was that. He was maybe a year...

I took both my kids pacifiers away when they were 12 mos. I took it cold turkey and threw it in the trash. It was hard the first few nights especially, but they get over it. The crying stops, and the get used to it. I took bottles, pacifiers all that stuff. It will be okay

My parents didn't use a pacifier with me (they'd learned their lesson while raising my brother), but I'll tell you how I got my son to get rid of his...

I had gotten tired of dealing with the damn things, so as soon as we got back from a family vacation (we needed him to suck on the thing to help equalize the pressure in his ears during takeoff and landing), I waited until trash day; then I gathered up every last one of them (and all his bottles) and dumped them in the trash.

Yes, there was much wailing and gnashing of teeth for about a week or so; but if your kid has no alternative, he WILL find a way to cope with the loss.

my sons both had pacifiers. my oldest was almost 4. (hanging head in shame) but he is 12 now and it seems like 4 is a baby to me now. but then it was horrible. haha

we made him give it to his karate teacher. if he is a big boy and can go to karate, then he doesn't need a binky. I felt bad for him too that first night so i slept with him. i shouldn't have made him do it. i feel bad now becuase my second son, (he was 4 too) i didn't make him get rid of it , but he left it at the store, and once that last binky was gone they don't let kids that OLD buy binkies.....so he was to take good care of his pacifier...if HE lost it, OH WELL SORRY. then the kid found his thumb. UGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

i promise you, they won't be 16 and sucking on pacifiers. :) be kind to you. they are only young once. :) good luck.

Gather them up, throw them away and tell your kid it is gone. Don't buy another one and don't give in. You could as some posters said make a show of looking for it but it is "lost".

You may have an ugly couple of day but it will all smooth out in time. My oldest stood up in her crib at about 7 month and threw it over the side and never wanted it back. My youngest never want one. If they are old enough to ask for a paci they are too old to have one.
