My family and I are planning to get a dog sometime this summer, but we are not yet sure about the breed, we have a smallish house, and my mom wants a dog that is medium to small sized (smaller than a golden retriever) but my dad does not want a toy dog, and we preferable want a nonshedding dog that doesnt have any special excersize needs, just like one or two walks a day. any recomendations?

I was going to recommend a number of toy dogs until i seen no toy dogs. So i'm going to recommend this pick something that you know that you can take care of well.

A sporting dog which are like beagles, cocker spaniels, setters, and pointers are all dogs that are very active and may need some extra caring for.

Then you got your hound group in this category their are dogs who don't really need extra amounts of exercise. I recommend a Dachshund from this group. They are great with children and are nice inside dogs since they won't shed.

There are the terriers and from those I recommend the mintuare schnauzer, west highland terrier, and bull terrier. All are great dogs. But from these only the bull dog won't shed but if played with aggressive as a pup it can turn out to not enjoy company so much.

Other nice dogs who don't shed include the bull dog, Boston Terrier, and Dalmatians.

Of course they all need exercise but walking em at least once a day is fine letting them out to play in the grass for an hour or so is great as well. But choose a dog that you know that you can take care of. If it will be inside always remember big dogs are more suitable for a big yard.

If you need anymore help feel free to contact me I have had alot of experiance with many types of dogs.

Shetland Sheepdogs are great. They are like Lassie but alot smaller. They weigh about 30-35 pounds and they love to play, and are extremely smart dogs. I have to tell you that any dog needs more than one or two walks a day, doesn't matter if it is small or big, dogs have exercise needs because they will be unhappy if they are only walked once in awhile. Most all dogs shed and but if you brush on a daily basis and keep the dog clean, you won't have hair all over the place. I hope your family finds a great dog but everyone needs to recognize the dogs needs, it is not just something you have for show.

I have a puli and absolutely love her. Pulik (pural for puli) are a very unique and intelligent breed. (They look like they have dred locks) They are medium breed and do not take up too much space. Pulik require exercise a walk or two a day should be fine though. Pulik do not shed! despite their long hair. Many sights claim they require a ton of grooming but that is very untrue, there is no brushing, you only need to separate the chords as they are growing in around 6 months to a 1 1/2 then they are very very easy to groom. If you live in a very warm climate I would not recommend them (especially the black ones) as their coat is very long and they can get hot easily. Other non sheding medium size breeds are the poodle and wheaton terrier though I do now as much about these breeds.

I have a Pembroke Welsh Corgi. Very hardy, versatile breed, happy with one or two walks a day, smaller than a golden retriever and bigger than a toy dog (between 25 and 40 pounds.) They do shed though (most dogs shed) and can be very stubborn if you do not show them right away that YOU are the boss! Otherwise they make great companions, very defensive of family and territory and are easily trained. Damn cute too!

My wife and I also have a small house. We have two miniature Dachshunds and they are great They weigh between 11 and 15 lbs, so they are not really considered a toy breed. They are intelligent and really fun to be around, and their coat does not have a musty smell like some small dogs. If you get a short hair, then you needn't worry about shedding. They need a good deal of attention, so if someone isn't around all day, you may consider getting two, since they are so small!

Perhaps a poodle. They come in several sizes and are extremely intelligent dogs. While they don't shed, they do need to be brushed and taken to the groomer at the very least several times a year for a hair cut.
I had a samll black poodle when I was achild that was a super dog. They are very loving and protective of their family.
Please do some research on different breeds and the good and bad things about each breed that you are considering.
Perhaps go to the AKC.org website and it will be able to help you'll with your decision.
Good luck with your decision.

COCKAPOO.......they are the most adorable little dogs. I have a 1 year old. They are very sweet, patient, very intelligent, loyal, obedient, easily trained, they love attention, very alert, and they aim to please. It's like every day she is always doing something so cute. My baby loves to go on car rides, fishing, whatever. She also loves kids. I don't have kids in my home, but she just jumps for joy when they come play with her in the neighborhood. They don't shed and have an easy to maintain curly or wavy coat. They are medium sized dogs

i have a havachu (mix between shih tzu and havanese) and he's the perfect size. maybe if you go for shih tzu or something. we had his fur groomed fairly short, so there's no fur lying all over the place. and he's a great lap dog. since he's a little dog, i don't exercise him too much because he gets tired.
