I just got a 4 month-old female pomeranian, and have been working hard to housetrain her. She has a carrier crate for crate training and she's currently fenced off in the kitchen.

I've been faithfully taking her out to the yard every 20 min. to 1 hour during the day, waiting quietly for her to go so I could praise her. But she hasn't gone outside once! Instead, the ONLY time she seems to go is when she's unattended in the kitchen. I get the feeling she doesn't want me to see her do her thing and is just holding it in until we get inside.

It's so frustrating because I really want the opportunity to praise her for doing things right to build some positive reinforcement. I've tried to keep her in her crate when we come back inside but she doesn't want to go in and be cooped up.

So that's my story. Should I keep taking her outside hoping she'll go? Should I hide or something and try to catch her in the act so I can take her outside? Thanks in advance!

Well, she's finally went potty outside twice now. But each time, I had to wait 45-60 min. for her to go! I praised her profusely each time, but...is there any way to make her go faster?

I am guessing whomever owned her before you punished her for peeing/housebreaking issues.

Keep taking her outside on a leash and bring a ton of the yummiest treats you can find. Crate her unless you are with her and take her out after eating, etc. If she doesn't pee outside with you, crate her when you come in and try again in 15 minutes or so. Choose a day when you can really work on this and keep her crated inside and keep her outside as much as possible. As soon as she pees outside, make a big deal out of it ---without scaring her of course---and feed her a bunch of treats one at a time.

Get some cleaner made to eliminate urine odor for the places where she peed indoors---nature's miracle is good. You need an enzyme-type cleaner to get rid of the smell so even a dog can't sense it.

Good luck and stick with it---I think your positive approach is right on track and will help build a great long term relationship with your new dog!

Keep taking her outside, and don't stand there and stare at her. Do you like being watched while you're sitting on the toilet? If you have a yard, turn away from her and let her go about her business. If you have her on a leash when you take her outside, get a long rope so she can get further away from you for some privacy. And are you staying outside with her long enough or rushing her back in the house? She needs time to figure out the right spot.

Dogs are very sensitive to this issue, if you have punished her in any way for peeing in the house, then she thinks that peeing anywhere in front of you is bad, so you must be gentle on her if she has an accident in the house, no shouting or scoalding, bring her outside straight away when she wakes up, bring a treat and praise her to the hills when she goes, puppies urinate every 2 hours and also after waking, playing, eating, drinking, it only takes up to 20 mins before they urinate, so stick with it, she will do it eventually.

First thing you have to do with a dog is us the same dry food. Dry food is the best because it cleans there teeth and it is not full of water. Until house broke, the dog should only be feed once a day at the same time every day. Walk the dog after you feed it. And I mean walk do not just stand there. Then walk him again a half hour after that. You should walk him as many times a day as you can until house broke. Walking helps it pass the food. Walk it in the same place every day. When they smell there own potty it makes them have to go. When the dog goes in the house, clean it up with vinegar. This does 2 things kills the smell+vinegar has a urine bass smell and the dog thinks you r marking this as your turf. When the dog goes in the house put the potty outside where you want it to go. Remember smelling his potty makes him want to go. So no potty smell in the house but lots of potty smell outside. You should have a pin or create just big enough for him to lie down. Most dog will not potty where they lay. Do not put anything in the pin that will soak up pee. When you are not watching your dog, he should be in the pin. If he goes in the house, you should catch him in the act and grab him and yell no then take him outside. Clean it up and take the potty outside. So to rap this up. Walk him as much as you can tell him good boy when he goes outside. When your not watching him keep him it the pin. When he goes inside tell him bad boy and take him outside..

Make being outside desirable! Bring her favourite toy and play with her outside. Once she has burned off a little energy, she will need to go. And the only place is outside.
