Here's an "out of the box" idea that might work perfectly for you: Look in the yellow pages, etc for junkyards or places that sell old building materials, etc. If you can find an old gate or section of an iron fence you might be able to get it cheaply and what a conversation piece! Just attach it either to your bed or the wall behind your bed. (You could use it as-is or paint it.) You will, of course have to measure your bed to make sure it's big enough. You can even still work with it if it's a bit oversized. I love projects like this, good luck to you!

Go to a thrift store. I bought my solid wood headboard for $15.

When I bought my first house my parents hit several thrift stores and managed to get all the furniture I needed for ~$250. I have replaced most of it, but the headboard looks great so I have no plans to get rid of it.

Draping some fabric loosely where a headboard would be, painting one on (if you have some major skills) or foregoing a headboard completely and hanging up and over sized canvas with some inexpensive art are all great options.

Here are a few ides of how to dress up your bed. Hope these pictures are helpful!
