Or is it a personal preference? Could you please shed some light on this for me?

Red wine should be drunk at room temperature, but this is typical EUROPEAN room temperature, about 60 deg F. If you live in a warm climate; especially with a hot summer, it is a mistake to drink the wine when it is too hot. A better rule is to drink the wine at cellar temperature, not room temperature. In a warm climate, it would be OK to chill the wine a bit; but not down to refrigerator temperature. However, in a warm climate you should try to keep your red wine cellared at no more than about 20 deg C (about 70 F), and it will be fine to drink it at this temperature. Don't let the wine warm up to room temperature if the room is much hotter than this.

Depends on the wine. Some reds, Beaujolais most notably, are served chilled, particularly during the summer.

Karen McNeil, author of the Wine Bible, begins her class by serving 2 glasses of red wine to the students and asking them to note the difference. Invariably, the class will describe in detail the long list of differences between the two. However, the two wines are poured from the same bottle, one has just been chilled to 52 degrees, and the other served at 70 degrees.

A light chilling to this temp tends to bring out some of the fruitier aspects of the wine. I like to keep my wine in the basement, or throw it in the fridge for a half hour before serving.

Technically reds are served below room temperature around 50-60 degrees F, but chilling them results in a rather sharp undesirable bite (chilling typically takes the wine below 40 degrees or so).

If you can't regulate the temperature more precisely serve at room temperature in lew of chilling.

They say white is supposed to be chilled and red is to be served at room temp. But I say it's a matter of preference.
Me personally, I want my red wine chilled, as I will not drink it warm. And I don't like white wines.

Red wines should be served just under room temperature (50-60 deg F). If they are too warm, they lose something. White wines are usually more chilled.

Red should be room temperature. You will also need to decant it if it is an older wine, if not, open and allowed to breathe for at least an hour.

White wines should be well chilled and do not need time to breathe.

Unless it's really cheap, it should be room temp. The only reason white wines are classically served chilled is because they are of poor quality. If you're drinking good merlot/cab etc, room temp.
