In short...because your vocal cords are tightened up when singing high notes, so less air travels through there. Try to sing a really high note "breathy"...As far as advantages go, it is just a part of expressing yourself with your voice.

The best way to learn this is with a balloon. Fill the balloon up and pinch the opening on the sides with both hands. Pull it apart and it will start to make a noise as the air comes out.

Move your hands apart. This will CONSTRICT the air flow and the air slows down BUT - at the same time, the notes go UP!

My advice to you is when you sing a high note for your high note to make it far all you have to do is take 1 good deep breathe in and then give it your all.
