Good question!
I hope we can get out of there and they will just defend themselves and not become offensive to their neighbors, EU, or us, but there is a chance that they might turn on us in the future after we "leave". If they elect a fanatic religious leader, imagine.......
Or is the plan for us to be there for decades, and not let them elect anyone that would go against us. Democracy? Free elections?

The Iraqi army is not our enemy. Our enemy are the terrorists. The NEW Iraqi army is free of Saddams tyranny, so we are training them in order to fight against the terrorists when we finally pull out. Without the Iraqi Army, America and us British certainly wouldnt have got this far up to now..

Easy, the Iraqi military is extremly weak ever since our invasion. We need to train their military and security force so they can protect their new Government officials from rebel, terrorist, and possibly foreign forces.
Once they are trained and are a signifigant force in the Middle East, our forces can leave, wich cant be soon enough :(.

We are training them so that they can defend and protect themselves from outsiders who want to take over their government. Iraqi's are not the enemy here.

It was either the US or Al Qaida; and our way of conducting military operations don't include flying planes into buildings, or strapping explosives to little kids and sending them up to check points.

The theory is that we help them learn to help themselves. This could backfire, as we have seen the Latin America, where we support and supply one side, then they turn against us. The old adage, "The Devil you know is better than the one you don't," applies here.

So they can defend their country and our soldiers can finally come home with the feeling of having accomplished something the liberals would never have done.

They are not organized enough to fight the Al Qaeda. If THEY can't fight them, then the Al Qaeda will grow again and take over.
If we train them, then OUR boys can come back home.

Well Hon, here's how it is. Iraq USED to have a viable army, the Republican Guard...remember them? They were extremely brave and well-disciplined. Then the ol' U.S. of A. came along and destroyed it.
Soooooo, now we're stuck trying to re-train an army from a bunch of disparate ethnic and religious groups, and it ain't goin' very well.
It's just one of those cases where sleeping dogs should have been allowed to lie.
