I don't think its all guys. But I used to be like this, so I'll take a stab at this question. I'm thinking its a possessive thing. When a guy is with a girl, that is his girl, to love and protect. They do not realize a women (or a man) has her own life to live, to make her own decisions, and to experience things on her own. If you bottle her up, it will only be natural for her to want and get away.
You should say "Do I let you do what you want? Then let me do what I want." I think a lot of life is doing what you love and want to do. No one should "let you" do anything. Just do what you want.
You really need to experience things apart from one another, its the basis of a "healthy" relationship.

It depends what context.
In general for me, I am protective of women because it seems hard-wired in me to be the paternal figure. It puts me in the strength position in the relationship, and seems to fill some innate need to be the provider, the protector, and the warrior.
When it comes to other guys meddling with my girl, well, then it's a matter of ego and territory. Guy rule #27 - a guy should never mess with another guy's woman, or his car. So, when a guy breaks rule #27, it is incumbant upon the other guy to stand up to him. Otherwise, you're letting some guy have his way with your woman, or your car. Can't have that.

well, having really been in love before, i can tell you that i wasn't a protective one. but i do believe if u think a guy is being overprotective, then he doesn't trust u, or thinks you have cheated or may cheat on him with another guy. i didn't need to be protective of my ex at all because i trusted her fully with the responsibility of our love and relationship and she could trust me in the same way.. so the issue would eather be trust, or that you have ALOT of guy friends that you constantly hug or call or whatever.

I think it's becuase of the massive amounts of nagging that we receive. It usually festers until it comes out in rage towards other people that you classify as "overprotective". Stay Hard.

Some guys are just insecure, maybe their gf is out of their 'normal' league and don't want to lose her - It's not the way to keep them though!, I've never been and have never 'smothered' - it's not a relationship then, just an 'ownership' thing.. ie - here's my GF - look at me - how great am i! --
Hope this isn't happening to you - if so - put him straight!

We want are woman to be untouched by other men. Its in our blood to protect our ladies from intruders. Woman can be the same. The hot chicks tend to want to be more free as in getting around a little to much, because they like all the attention.

I think it is a primal instinct really. Some guys arent like that, but many are. It is because we want to feel like we guard the things we hold dear to us. I am a little older now, and not so protective, but I know what you are talking about. We want to feel like we are the guardians.

It is the green eyed monster jealousy. A jealous man will try to make your life much smaller than it could be. Get rid of anyone doing this to you.

An example of what you're talking about would probably do you good. :P What do you mean overprotective?
(I'm reading my answer here, and am laughing at how over protective it sounds just by itself. *lol*)

Insecurity. My husband still acts like a jealous fool after almost 16 years of marriage. It started off really cute and sometimes still is. Mostly it pisses me off.
