The parents wanted to put him in Catholic school because he was being bullied over his name at his current school. Since the Catholic school supported the plan to enroll the boy using his mother's maiden name, is it reasonable to assume they were just trying to avoid similar problems at their school.

Not only the catholic philosophy is narrow minded, but ALL christian based philosophies are the creation of individual ideology. Ancient, or contemporary. People choose to associate with a religious philosophy that supports their individual ambition. We love the thing that gives us what we want. Simple as that. Religion has been created for social control. Period. We are all born with the responsibility to act in a manner that will benefit our global population. The association of any religion philosophy is unnecessary. So, just be the best person you can be.

What I can't understand is why that father has not changed the family name long before this incident. It is one thing to be proud of your heritage. It is another to subject your children to the jeers and teasing of other students, when a simple name change would avoid all of this.
I don't blame the Catholic Church for this, but I do blame them for the years and years of cover-ups that has led to that mammoth payoff in a court case. Shame on them!

It is crazy! This is like the 15th time this question has been posted here in the last hour. I like to generally post the Gallileo wiki link as he was imprisoned by the catholic church for the rest of his live because he said the Earth orbits the sun and not the other way around.

If Catholics actually followed what Christ teaches they would be a religion of love and real caring for people.Jesus accepts people and loves them God the father accepts people and asks them to turn from sin. He does not make them to be cast out and fed to the wolves! How inhumane.

This is an isolated and local episode and does not reflect the orientation of the Catholic Church on the subject. The Philippines had an archbishop (with rank of Cardinal) named
Cardinal Sin. (Full name/title: Jaime Cardinal Sin).

Why would the parents really name their kid Hell? What's really up here?
Its been the Catholic Church's long standing custom not to name Christians in baptism after things like Hell or anyone excommunicated. You may not like the idea but part of the reason for the custom was to avoid persecution of the person himself.
Catholic Schools are private schools and can refuse the enrollement of anyone.
But what's really going on here? Why couldn't the parents give the kid another name? What were the parent's thinking?
Let me have a kid and call him "F." Do you think this might cause a problem for the kid? Use common sense. Your belittling of the church is way out of line here.

A far cry from the acceptance of all types of people that Jesus had. :( I'm sure there's a lot of Christians that are members of Catholicism, but Catholicism itself has a lot of problems and I couldn't in good conscience recommend it to anyone.

If the father had true wisdom, he would go to court/ town hall where ever it is done in that country, and legally change the family last name so that none of he decedents has to fight that battle again.

Best headline ever:
Church school won't accept son of Hell
http://www.news.com.au/adelaidenow/story...
it is gay, but the School reversed it, and he can go there.
I think the whole thing started because he was being picked on at public school too much for his name, and the catholic school didn't want the responsibility
