Both my parents and my sister wear glasses. I'm sure I don't have 20/20 vision. Does waiting to get glasses help or hurt your vision in the long run?

Actually this came up at my eye doctor appointment a few days ago. I'm farsighted and should have glasses. Without glasses I get headaches and a tense neck, but I can drive without them so I don't "need" them.
Wearing glasses makes your eyes relax, and over time your eyes become dependent on the glasses and your vision gets worse. That's why you need a re-exam every year, to updates the RX, since your vision is getting gradually worse.
Without glasses, your vision will remain the same (provided that you don't have a degenerative disease) and as long as you don't need them to drive, the worst that can happen is whatever discomforts you are feeling now.
Get an exam, and ask the doctor what they think. Just make sure you don't go to a doc that sells glasses, or you might get a pretty biased opinion.

It depends somewhat on how much you like to read. Most persons can get along with 20/30 vision, but at 20/40 reading becomes more of a problem. The blurring of objects in the distance is frequently not noticed until one gets corrective lenses and remarks, "Wow what have I been missing!"

Waiting for adults is probably ok, as long as you are not driving. The situation is quite different for infants and small children. If there is a large disparity in vision from one eye to the other, the visual pathway to the brain will not develop correctly in the weaker eye. The condition is called amblyopia. Any infant or child with eye crossing should see an eye specialist promptly, even if only a small infant.

I agree, a long as you are not driving, you can have any level of sight and not wear glasses.
It will not hurt your eyes/blind you not to wear your glasses.
If you are not noticing any sudden changes in vision or pain you do not have to go.
Just a thought, I like eye doctors, they are helpful and friendly, they recommend glasses/ contacts but do NOT make you purchase anything. Why don't you go and get an exam, maybe you are 20/20 and have nothing to worry about anyway

I'd say go now. When I first saw my vision getting worse (about eigth grade) I didn't think anything of it, so I didn't go in. I was probably at about 20/40 at the time.
Two years later I went, and it had gotten to 20/70. Go now, it makes things easier.

You should be getting yearly eye exams. Chances are you will need glasses eventually, but maybe not right now. Still, yearly exams will ensure that your eyes are as healthy as they can be.
