Then what would they do to people are really do think differently.

The story: http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20070709/od_afp/australiareligion

In a nutshell an Australian Catholic school has barred a student whose last name is Hell. That's really his family's name, and it is of Austrian derivation.

It seems to this observer that here in the 21st century, some religious people are reverting to a pre-enlightenment agenda.

Are we in danger of losing the last six centuries of human progress and returning to a world bound by superstition and shepherded by an blind and unreasoning faith?

Makespark--no not young. 60. But yes idealistic.
And not panicked; concerned at the sheer dumbness.

"Catholic school", says it all. Freethinking, open , secular education is the way to progress. Religious `education` has belief as its prime objective, as long as superstition is allowed to influence our children, the cycle of ignorance and indoctrination will continue.

No, we're not in danger. The industrialized world is too far entrenched in doing things better, faster, more efficiently for maximum profit to degrade back to the Dark Ages. Too many non-theists are making too much money to allow the church to put them out of business. Trust me, the school will either relent, or be shunned because of the bad publicity.

Calm down, you're the one going crazy over this making a statement like

"Are we in danger of losing the last six centuries of human progress and returning to a world bound by superstition and shepherded by an blind and unreasoning faith?"

All because of this little incident.

Like you said, it is just a name so i think the last paragraph of you question is a little over the top. Catholics have always done stupid things like this and will always be 400 years behind the rest of the world.

well youre right about the regression, however the developed world, (mostly big cities, in and outside of hte us. are not regressing back). and those who wish to basically just miss out on progress.

So the danger is rather minimal, unless ofcourse a religious fundy like bush gets elected again....

I think we are. What with the advent of technology, fast food, drugs, guns, and retardedness, people start to become total... Well, I don't want to swear. I wouldn't try to figure out why they would do that, but it shows idiocy in the intolerance of someone who can't even help their name. Religion should not be used like that.

They shouldn't have a problem if this is the legal last name. Come on people...a child can't help the last name they are given at birth.

That just idiotic. It's a name. What if I named my child Lucifer and wanted him to enroll.

it's just a name as f*c* is a word, it's religion that takes life from us to believe what they want us to believe so that we sacrifice our lifes for them.
