I am currently in the process of changing careers & am quite lost as to what path I want to take. I have been offered a position with The Ritz Carlton, which promises quick promotion within the company. I have also been offered a position with a Metlife Insurance branch as an independent rep.
There are pros and cons to each job:
Ritz Carlton
Cons: Commute (60 Miles each way), Pay for Parking $12.00 a day, .50 paycut
Pros: Promotion Ability, Great Benefits, Travel Benefits (Room Discount), Good Company

Metlife
Cons: Questionable Upward Mobility?, Base Salary & Comission
Pros: Local, Flexibility (No Set Schedule)

I am just not sure which path I want to take and was hoping some people with more knowledge of each industry could provide some insight!

Well the commute is something to consider- do you live in a place with bad winter weather? Might be a huge headache to travel those 60 miles in snow and ice, even if you can spend the night in the hotel. Also this commute would eat into your social life to the extent you might not have one :)
Another plus for both jobs, is that they are National Companies and could lead to transfers in other parts of the country if you wanted to relocate, so good luck.

I know that driving is a big deal these days and if you haft to do the long driving, just set the cost of gas and tolls a side for this and as for the job, the Ritz Carlton is the better job to take, you can move up the job latter and make something good for the comp. your heading in the right pathway.
good luck to you

A very rough decision. But, take lightly, and with a grain of salt, promises for future Promotion Ability.
