Virtualdub is really good ... and fast
u can try this tool too .. it comes with all the codecs.. but am not really sure of its preformance ...

really good. the free version has a watermark you can remove by purchasing full version. other than the watermark there are no other restrictions on the free version, and the watermark will be removed from any work you complete on the free version if you purchase full version
