I developed severe tooth ache and after suffering for 3 days saw my dentist. After an xray, I was told that I needed a root canal. The whole proceedure was worse that giving birth, so painful even after numerous injections. Root canal was completed last Thursday. The tooth not as painful, but still cannot eat on that side of mouth or on the back tooth, very sensitive and sore to the touch. Will this ease or do I have to wait until the crown fitted? (I will never have this done again, I will have the tooth out next time). I cannot believe Im still in pain after paying out a fortune !

Unfortunately, some patients have post-op pain as you describe. It is not common 4 days after the procedure, but it can happen. You mentioned a key point in that you say that things are sort of improving. When the procedure is done, the ligament around the tooth is irritated and possibly inflamed from previous infection. The ligament can remain this way for about a week. If pain is not improving over time, it will be necessary to investigate further.

Remember that the dentist didn't do this to you--you did this to yourself. You'll be happy in the long run. Root canals for the most part are no more painful than getting a routine filling done. Some teeth in certain individuals can be hard to numb due to unique anatomy of the nerves, bones, and teeth. Also, if a tooth is hurting and inflamed going into the appointment for a root canal, getting complete anesthesia is sometimes impossible!! Good Luck!!

Agree w/ cherry, you should only be experiencing residual pain, not what you are describing. Go back asap, because an untreated infection may cause severe complications; spreading to the bone structure, blood poisoning etc... Not trying to scare you, but trust me you don't want the aforementioned complications!!! I had a dental assistant forget to remove gauze packing after a wisdom tooth extraction !!! $$$ could be the least of your problems, you can always make more!!! In addition the dentist should have told you not to chew anything hard on that tooth until you get the crown. Please don't wait to call and demand to be seen again. Lord Bless you.

You have discovered what many have, including myself. I went thru 8 root canals with crown placements before I finally said no more. I too will in future have the damned tooth pulled before going thru that pain again. But I am almost anal now about keeping my teeth clean so I don't get anymore cavities...dentures are not a fun alternative. As long as you have the temp crown in place, you will have some discomfort, once the permanent crown is cemented into place you should be ok. Hope you went with a metal crown...those porcelain veneer crowns crack and fracture after about five years and then you get to go thru it all again. Not to mention they are more expensive, and only because that is what the dentist charges, they don't cost anymore to manufacture. I won't pay for anymore of my dentist's vacations.

what's sore?
the canal or gums around?
if it's deep pain, visit your dentist ... something is wrong ...
it's normal to have a bit of pain, because drills weren't very nice to your gums, and it's a normal procedure ... after you get your crown fitted, it will still be sore for couple of days, and you'll feel like your tooth is 1mm higher than the rest ... and then everything will be fine, and you won't even know it's not your tooth ...

You should not still be in pain, it might be sensitive, but not painful.. Go back or give them a ring you may have an infection, that needs antibiotics to clear.... I used to work as a dental nurse/receptionist... I don't know everything, but know you should not be in pain... Hope this helps you... toothache is awful.../
