You shouldn't. Six million animals are put down in the U.S. each year because there aren't enough homes. Leave breeding to the professionals.

Agree with the other answers in spaying and neutering unless you want to breed it. Not sure if it is a male or female but the animal will know what to do. Check on the internet under dog breeding.

Unless you are a professional breeder of show dogs (which you obviously aren't!), leave breeding to the professionals! What would you do if your dog had complications while in labor? If you don't know anything about breeding, I'm sure you don't know what to do in a delivery crisis. Do you want to risk having your dog die in puppy birth? Get your dog spayed or neutered to prevent unwanted litters. I assure you, if given opportunity while in heat, dogs will figure it out for themselves! Who is going to give homes to the puppies? There are millions of dogs and puppies sitting in shelters waiting for homes already. Give them a chance by not adding to the population.
If you are one of the misguided individuals who believes that dogs need to breed in order to feel complete or fulfilled, I have one word for you. NOT! Dogs are a victim of instinct dating back to the beginning of time, when there weren't many dogs. A dog, spayed or otherwise, has no maternal longings, that's a human emotion people have given dogs. If bred, the dog will do what instinct tells her, but it's not a choice she would make for herself. An altered pet is a better pet. They are calmer, less likely to roam or fight, more affectionate to their families, and less aggressive. You also won't have those messy heat cycles to deal with.
If you believe altered pets are fat and lazy, I say a dog mimics it's owner! Any dog will get fat and lazy if it's at your feet all day while you lay on the couch eating chips! You must take your dog for at least one good long walk daily, two is better. That will keep your dog (and you) svelte and healthy.
For all these reasons, and more, I implore you to call the vet today. Get your dog spayed, and enjoy the approval of millions of animal lovers everywhere!

first it must be registered (purebred obviously) then you take it to dog shows to PROVE it is an EXCELLENT example of the breed WORTHY of passing on its genetics.. then you take it to a Veterinarian to check for breeding soundness etc...(hips etc.)

THEN you select a mate who has met the same criteria.

also you should start when you select yoru dog - get from a reputable breeder who has done the same before they bred - any pups from pet store are "pet quality" only - NOT breeding quality.
mutts (unregistered dogs and "designer dogs") should NEVER be bred.

anybody who breeds anything other than quality purebreds is a puppy mill or some hapless idiot...

with over 6 million pets euthanized in USA alone - there is no good reason for creating any more (even if you have homes for your pups - it means somebody elses pups will not find homes)

I have to agree with everyone else (who's answered so far): don't breed your dog. There are too many homeless pets out there. In fact, in the United States alone, 575 cats and dogs are put to sleep EVERY HOUR because of over population.

Get your dog spayed or neutered. You will only add to the millions of unwanted pets already in the shelters.

Well first off it is funny,,,bc u know how dogs breed....right....just kiddin....but first i got to know if it is a girl or boy. See i breed pitts.....red boy snooty's...they are awesome.....but back to the answer.....
If u got a female they can go in heat from a little as 9 mths to a little over a year....there female privates will get red and swollen, it make even drip ( blood), for a little.....then u know she is ready. I usually mate my female on there second heat.
Males are usually ready whenever...lol.....but seriously i dont mate my male until there are atleat 1 year 4 mths...gives them time to mature and develop temperment.....also for some reason i feel if u mate your dogs to early u stunt growth...NOT A PROVEN FACT....but to me its factual.
But if u really dont have a designer breed or purebreed breed like Bob says...."lets' controls the pets population, have your pet spayed or neutured"...come on down!!!! Just kiddin.......
