Sand!! Sand when heated turns into glass. Everything else makes sense too.

I think the answer is salt rather than sand. Salt turns a flame bright yellow, but makes water taste bitter. Salt occurs in the desert (as do scorpions) and in the sea (with the fish).

sand seems logical to me or a a pearl, (i know the pearl isn't likely but hey you never know).
