Yes, it's from chidhood, and our culture in general. It's normal to do that. But yes I also reflect after saying something like that and try to make a mental note to say something more appropriate next time.

In vain? Since I don't believe there is any kind of god, I don't consider using a socially accepted phrase as anything other than that, a commonly used phrase. It has no meaning or significance other than that for me.

you're sinning by ability of denying GOD exists AND for making use of His call in ineffective. the type is that Christians know to convey regret. The atheist won't. remember, even the devil believes in GOD.

For atheists it cannot be weird to say God's name in vain, because they do not believe in God. Yes, it's a mere habit.

They're just common expressions, they have no meaning otherwise. When a church- goer bangs his finger and says, " God damn ", He's not actually asking god to condemn his hammer. Exactly the same for the non-believer.

I look at it as a cultural item that is so prevalent to have lost its original meaning, like "kleenex" or "bandaid". But if I think of it at the time, I usually try to find something else to say.

If I say OMG, it is not taking a beings name in vain. It would have to exist before that requirement to be met.

No, I don't find it any weirder than saying good bye which once meant "God be with you"

It's no worse than when I snap, "Goddess Bless it!"
I'm a non-deistic Pagan, so it doesn't mean much. But I guess it's habit.
