If you take your theology from religious art, Heaven help you! They have Eve holding an apple!!! And Mary, the mother of Jesus, looking like a teenager at the foot of the cross. (Mind you, the astute artist, when asked why she looked so young by a non-too-pleased Pope who'd commissioned the work, replied, 'A virtuous woman long retains her youthful appearance'. Nice one.)
Nowhere in the Bible does it say that Adam and Eve had bellybuttons. For all we know, they did not.

There is what I guess you would call a philosophical stance, called omphalism, which says that God created the universe with the appearance of age... fossils in place already, light most of the way from the stars that gave it off, and belly buttons on the first man and woman ('omphalos' is 'navel' in Greek, I believe). It's kind of a wonky work-around as an attempt to reconcile literal readings of the Bible with available external evidence.

No artist that has ever drawn them has actually seen or met the REAL Adam and Eve. Thus, no one knows whether they had belly buttons or not. The artist is just drawing them that way because everyone now has a belly button.

Because when Adam and Eve came out of the oven God gave them a little poke with His finger to see if they were done. Didn't you learn anything at sunday school.

Because we know that the first humans were biologically descended from earlier pre-hominids, who reproduced in the usual mammalian manner. Man was created in God's image and likeness when God took this biological entity He had formed from inorganic matter ("the dust of the earth"), and breathed into it spiritual life, free will, moral capacity and an immortal soul, just as the Bible reveals. Prior to that act on God's part, humans didn't exist, though their biological ancestors did.

Very thought provoking.
I would surmise that the imagery is based on the preconceived notion of humanity and the physical appearance of the body.
The actual presence of an umbilicus may have been a provision but I guess we'll never know in this existence.

artists aren't nearly as smart as people think. some just did as they were told. they learned to paint and other people learned to milk cows and culture cheese etc. some learning to plough and plant seed. it was a job. we do what we can and try to scratch out a living. the smart ones assume a higher power and try to live right. they don't generally have to live with the hell in their minds when they get older. artists are just scratch out a living like a chicken in the yard. day by day, hour by hour.

Well this brilliant question should be in the Book or Records, if there is one. The one thing man is good at is destroying his own creations, The belly button is the big give away.
It makes me wonder what they were attched to, what was it that gave birth to them?
Your question will keep me smiling all day and possibily tomorrow. Thanks very much.
