Is it true in 2008 everyone that visits outside the US will now need a passport, even children under the age of 15?
When we went on our cruise two years ago, all we needed was a birth certificate.
My inlaws want to take us on a cruise somewhere, I think Mexico, but not sure where, in April 2008, and said we would need a passport.
Any advice on this would be greatly appreciate.
How much do they run?

The answer is simply yes. Starting January 2007, it was already implemented that you need a passport even to cross over to Canada. So I would advise you to go to the post office near by and get your passport soon before you wait until your trip comes up. The passport takes awhile for it to process so its best to get it as soon as possible if you dont want to pay the expediated fee.

If you want the actual, acurate information you should go to the State Department website. So many people here have misinformation or outdated facts. My husband and I just got back from a Caribbean cruise in April. At that time the rules were that we did NOT need one for CRUISING to the Caribbean until Jan of 2008. We applied anyway knowing that we would eventually need them for future cruises. It arrived in 10 1/2 weeks but not soon enough for us to take them along on the cruise. They have changed the rules twice since then because of the glut of applications people are missing their trips. My advice is apply now so that when you need them they will be in your possesion. Even children need one but they are a little less expensive. You can even apply for one every month if you need to spread out the fees over time. Adults ones are $97 plus you need to add the cost of pictures to that. This fall might be the best time as slightly fewer people may apply because it won't be the high travel season.

It doesn't seem very fair if you ask me, i mean it's like we're being punished for something we didn't do, we can't even go into Canada without a passport, but that starts sometime in november or december. I don't know much about the passports but I heard they are kind of costly. So, i would go all the places you'd want to go to this summer. That's what i'm doing i'm going all over Canada.

Yes you will need a passport everywhere you go even driving state to state to my understanding. I don't know when it going to starts but I know that they are planning on it. So my advice is getting your passport know because there is a very extensive back log on getting your passport.
