This morning while I was in the kitchen, I dropped my puppy's 6 lb bag of food on the floor (it wasn't that close to her but close enough to scare her). My 14 week old puppy was so scared that she ran into the other room and sat in a corner. Then she would not come back into the kitchen, wouldn't play with her toys or eat her breakfast. She is now down for her nap. Will she forget about it when she gets up? Does anyone have any suggestions on what to do if she is still scared? Thanks!

LOL! Yeas, she will be fine. If she is still scared, when she wakes from her nap, you can tempt her in the kitchen with a treat and tell her she's a good girl. I promise, she will be just fine!

Petting and talking will calm her down after a fright. My dogs are fully grown, but are still afraid of thunderstorms, so I have to let them in and allow them to cower under my seat. When I pet and talk to them, they get up and wander around the house, almost as they normally would, but only until the next peal of thunder. :-)

The puppy will eventually forget and come into the kitchen again. Or just pick it up, petting it all the while, and bring it there to show there is nothing to be afraid of.

One of my dogs was given to our family already predisposed to fright. She had no appetite, was startled by the slightest noises, would hide when called and would pee herself if you got too close. I wasn't around during her first year at our place, but I worked on her (petting) once I got back home. Within a year, she was almost normal. She put on weight, began to play with people and the other dog, and no longer wet herself. She's still startled by noise, but barks instead of cowering. All because of "massage therapy", he, he.

There is a critical stage in puppy development that many folks are totally unaware of: Fear Imprinting...between 14-18 weeks events in the puppy's life can change the course of any genetic temperament.....I would slowly work on bringing this pup back to the scene if she looks like she is still fearful.....good luck and I hope this has been helpful..

She should be fine when she wakes up.

Use her favorite toy and play with her for a while and while she's engrossed in the game, just lead her to the kitchen and give her a treat or two. That should solve the problem if it persists after she awakens.
