being pagan, we get some good ones! saying we worship the devil doesn't bother me much. i guess it would if we believed in satan though. what gets me is when they make fun of us because of what they see on tv and movies and they think that's what we do, or try to do. i have been told i'm too pretty to be a witch. (yes, i find that an insult to my religion) i've been told i'm evil, that we do live sacrifices. one of my christian friends tried telling me about her friend who got married to satan when she was wiccan as a teenager and satan actually manifested at the ritual and the 2 had sex right there. i find that insulting. nothing like that happens. gee, i could go on and on and on lol

oh, my boss has also stated that no witch will ever work for her. she's catholic and we get along very well. she has another witch working in her other office too. this is one of the problems pagans have in today's society. if they don't keep their mouths shut, they risk losing alot

That the Bible was full of contradictions and I was a moron or just plain wrong for believing it. This was the most offensive thing that has been said to me because the people making the claim could not back up what they said (I asked for a single contradiction and none had ever even opened the Bible). This is insulting because while I am happy to listen to, or participate in a discussion on virtually any subject (within reason) I find one sided narrow minded negatively toned and obviously uneducated opinions offensive to my intelligence. I would rather have someone say, "Santa Claus exists because I have a belief in him" rather than someone who claims Jesus never lived but backs it up with 'something they read a while ago. I mean really!

Wow, there are so many. Do I have to limit it to one?

There's a nice long list. Apparently, since I'm a Christian, I'm:
1. Inbred. (My mom and dad were NOT related.)
2. Unintelligent. (With an IQ of between 125 and 145? Yeah, right)
3. Brainwashed. (Even though I was an atheist for most of my life?)
4. Evil. (I won't argue this one, everyone's a little evil sometimes)
5. A redneck. (Nope, sorry, don't fit the definition)
6. Racist, sexist, and a homophobe. (No, no and NO!)
7. Ignorant. (But aren't we all?)
8. Hateful of everyone from atheists to Wiccans (which I most certainly am NOT).

To name a few. And yes, these things have been said about my religion in general.

Being a Witch, I get a lot of zingers. But I usually consider the source and don't let it get to me. In the big picture, I chalk it up to ignorance, intolerance, and the general belief that their way is the only way (referring to none in particular and everyone in general due to the oversensitive nature of some). See, there is a difference. I am willing to listen to others, right up until they get bloviated and rant on an ego trip of sorts, bashing anyone who is not "cookie-cutter" like them.

I will continue to believe as I wish, and the others can do the same.

I used to attend Unity church of Practical Christianity. I was looking for books about the Unity movement in the library. Of course, along with books on Unity and the New Thought movement was plenty of "anti" literature. One chapter talked about the Eastern influence on religion in American and blamed it on people moving here from the East and bringing with them their "imported religious FILTH". I bet Hitler would be so proud of this author.

I am sure that EVERY religion has had horrible, hateful, things said about them, as well as libel and slander.

I think that sort of thing is ALWAYS WRONG, no matter who is doing the trash talk, and who is on the receiving end.

Honest critique of a religion is one thing, honest debate, honest questions, I am fine with. Harmful actions done in the name of ANY religion should be addressed.

But spiteful, hateful, name calling, and making up lies just to discredit a group of people, is WRONG, and is FORBIDDEN in MOST religions.

"Well, I'll pray for your soul."

People have said more offensive things about atheists in general, but I ignore them - they're not aimed at me specifically, just based on the holder's experiences.

But this, when said personally to me, is way more offensive than anything else, including "You're wrong and going to hell". That recognises my beliefs, even if it doesn't respect them.

The first statement discards my wishes to keep religion out of my life, casts my thoughts off as insignificant. As if they're so much better than me!?

My ex-girlfriend, who became a non-denominational, evangelical Christian, said:

"You're going to burn in hell for all eternity."

Doesn't that sound like a curse? See, at that time, I was unaware that she had "found Christ." That was a hard and unexpected conversation. Besides, I thought that we had ended our relationship on amicable terms...

Although not insulting, I felt doubly wounded by that comment since we were at one point an affectionate couple, and the image of hell, in the sense of fire and brimstone, is undoubtedly disturbing.

Look, I understand that hell is a reality to Christians, but I find using fear-tactics to intimidate people into their faith ineffective and disconcerting.

The most hurtful is just the pure hatred I get out of people just by being Atheist. I got fired once for admitting to being Atheist (after being specifically asked), but I couldn't prove it.

I change my beliefs every so often. Right now I call myself an deist/agnostic with Christian leanings. I get accused of being an noncommittal coward...but I just see it as open minded and seeking the truth.
