Even tons of cotton bale can be reduced to ash with a single match stick. Our accumulated 'karmas' awaiting to give result are just like the cotton bale. The name of god act like a match stick which will reduce the 'karma pal' to ash. In the Kaliyug, Nama sankeertan and Nama Jap are the best panacea for this illusory existence in this mundane world. In fact the name is more potent than the form. Once the name is uttered, forms comes to the mind and vice verse. Once the namajapa is done continuously, continuous flow of grace can be ensured.

While chanting mantras yur mind is concentrated in the name and form of the deity yu worship and you seem to feel in communication with or inthe presende of god .soyu r mind is is filled with divine and pure thoughts . yopu chant any mantra with the feeling and belief that it would have some effect on you. This will be a form of auto-suggestion that will surely work on yur mind and body.. It has this psychologicaleffect . I thing it has some psychosomatic effect on the person.
In kaliyuga thigs and vlues are perverse and the competition for survival is sever and people are prone to leave the pathof justice as they find in practiacl life it results in loss to them. To resist the tempatation of falling into ways of sins and injustice due to temptation and force of circumstnces , the chanting of the mantras might help

(1) Sri Swami Sivananda said,
"The power in the name of God is awakened by constant repetition".
Sri Swami Sivananda was a versatile Master in the Science of Yoga. His Ashram head-quarters is in Rishikesh, India.
(2) Lord Chaitanya preached the chanting of God's name from house to house.
(3) I have read somewhere the following Sanskrit verse :-
"Namno hi yavati sakti papa-nirharane Hareh,
Tavat kartum na saknoti patakam pataki narah".
Meaning :- "The power of Hari-nama to destroy the sins is so great that the sinner cannot commit that much sin even if he tries".
The sins committed in Kali-yuga is too great. So, the spiritual methods except Hari-nama-chanting are practically ineffective in this yuga. Hence, any kind of spiritual sadhana must be combined with some Hari-nama-japa so as to harness the sadhana's power in full.

Because it helps focus your mind on one thing(God) and block out all others. It is said that God is easiest to realize during Kali Yuga, more so than at any other time, so if you persist in calling His/Her name, God cannot help but come to you eventually!. There is much less chance of error in ritual, or in being misled by false doctrines(which abound at this time), when you chant the Name, as well; it is simple and direct, and anyone can do it, therefore all may attain.

what power? the power of chanting the name of God is developing love and bhakti, and deliverance from this hellpit. These are the two main things, among many other side effects such as steady mind etc.
why advised?
because in the age of kali people are lazy, ignorant, short lived, have bad luck, and considered less intelligent than in previous ages..
so therefore we need an easy method, and this is the easiest method.
whoever gives me thumbs down, probably thinks they are really great. this is called AHAMKAR- another bad trait of the people of this kalyug.

Chanting name is good for kaliyuga as most of powerful mantras have been lock by Shiva, due to fear of their misuse in kaliyuga by asuras. so we dont have any othr alternative but to remember god by his simple names. But it is not an easy path, many birth's tapasya is needed.
You cant make God happy by tricks. honest effort is needed and it takes time

The question itself is based on a wrong conception. How did you embrace the ill-logic that God wanted us to chant his names ? Please show me anywhere an example of God/Demi Gods as having asked for chanting their names so that I correct myself. Mantras are related with our psychology. The world itself is our mind. No mind, no universe. Mantras are for our well being. Mantra is a super science. Mantra: ‘Man’ means mind and ‘Tra’ means wave or vibration. Mantra Meditation is a science, i.e., it is a technical practice that results in a predictable and reliable outcome or experience. They are the mind vibration in relationship to the Cosmos. The Science of Mantra is based on the knowledge that sound is a form of energy having structure, power, and a definite, predictable effect on the chakras and the human psyche. God possesses many invisible energy streams which have been witnessed and understood by scientific teachers of Yoga and Spiritual Science via their subtle divine vision. And on the basis of characteristics they have been named. They are also called demigods. God’s Wealth Energy is called Lakshmi, Intellectual Energy is called Saraswati, War Fighting Energy is called Durga, Creative Energy is called Brahma, Nourishing Energy is called Vishnu, Destructive Energy is called Shiva, Mental and Bodily Energy is called Hanuman, Success Energy is called Ganesh and Governing Energy is called Indra. We must contact and build a bond with whatever that is beneficial and worth imbibing for us. Further by rendering these energy centers are rendered closer for our benefit and the method of doing so is called worship of God. Hence, the need of chanting mantras. If somebody asking a question for the sake of asking, it is alright. If out of sheer curiosity to gain knowledge, it is well understood. But, one fails to understand the spirit of this question. A question impregnated with pre-conceived and untrue notion is capable of creating confusion among devotees. If you do not know the answer, then the question should not have been pre-conceived but direct.

Gods Names are Absolute, they are identical with Him. He is present when one chants His name. Though Om is nondifferant than God (Krishna), and there are unlimited names of God who is also known as Krishna, Jehovah, Allah, Vishnu etc. Krishna Himself recommends for this age to chant the maha Mantra (the great mantra for deliverance from all suffering and illusion) Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare. Krishna appeared 5,00 years ago as Lord Chaitanya Maha Prabhu (Lord Gaurunga)He is actually Radha and Krishna Combined and is considered the most merciful incarnation of God,being in the mood of Sri Radha. He is giving pure love of God freely only for the price of ones faith. He said this is the Yuga Manta and is the quickest easiest way to the top most level of spiritual realization. But if one is attached to their own religion and name of God then they should chant that name. The problem many peole speculate on what is a name of God. They confuse God representatives with Himself. But they will make gradual advancement even if they worship the demigods because the demi gods can direct them in the direction of the Supreme Lord. go to harekrishnatemple.com for info. write me for a direct link for all info on this mantra and others. Thanks

God's Name(s) are always beneficial, in this yuga or in another. We have to remember Him always. It is very important to focus on Him, cause when we'll be old, the only thing which is important to remember is the Lord's Name. At the moment of death, remembering His Name, it can help to attain moksha. Japa will cut us from our vasanas, from the negative effects of the Kali Yuga. It keeps us healthy.
