Hi!

Human beings are made up of around 75 per cent water. Two thirds of our bodily water is found inside our cells, with the rest between the cells and in our blood.

Water provides the medium in which all the body's chemical reactions take place and the solution in which foodstuffs are dissolved and transported. It helps regulate our body temperature through sweating.

A 2 per cent loss in the water surrounding our cells can result in a 20 per cent drop in energy levels. That's how important water is for us.

On average, your body loses 1-1.5 litres of water a day. If someone is undertaking a lot of activity, and therefore breathing and sweating more, they would lose more.

'If you drink too much, your body will get rid of the excess, so you will pass urine more often and it will look almost clear.

'If you don't drink enough, your body will save water by concentrating your urine, which will look darker, and your brain will tell you that you need more water by making you feel thirsty.

Another thing to keep in mind is that water is found in fruits, vegetables, milk and juices. Water from these sources will go some way to meeting your daily requirements, so people do not need to drink a full eight glasses of water on top of this

Examples of the water content of some foods according to the British Nutrition Foundation
Apples (100g) 84.5g
Grapes (100g) 81.8g
Milk (1 pint) 531.8g
Broccoli (85g) 77.43g
Sweet corn (85g) 59.42g
Tomato soup (220g) 185.24g

A reasonable water intake can help with weight loss. We need around half a cup of water for every 100 calories we burn.

So how much should you drink?

The minimum figures for the body's daily water loss are 500ml through urine and 700ml through breathing and sweating.

Doctors advise that to be on the safe side we should drink at least 1.2 litres of liquids (2.5 pints). So, remember, although water is essential, you don't need to become obsessed about drinking eight glasses a day!

xx

Yes and it will definitely kill you.

This applys to most drinks as well. Water is absorbed readily into the body. When too much water is absorbed you will suffer reverse osmosis.

This means instead of nutrients passing from blood to cells they will pass from cells to your blood. Your kidneys will try and help by sending water to your bladder, but if you drink too much, too quickly you will have a stroke. I freind of mine did this on his 21st birthday.

If you drink 8 to 10 pints of liquid in an hour you can expect to have serious problems.

Athletes use "isotonic drinks" to reduce this effect. These drinks have a similar composition to blood, so you can drink far more when you are training without becoming washed out.

Saline drips in hospital operate on a similar principal.

Yes it definitely is.
You might recall the case of Leah Betts a teenager who died from ecstasy. What actually killed her was the drug stopped her feeling when she had quenched her thirst, and she drank so much water that her brain became swollen and ultimately killed her.
Most people agree 6-8 glasses a day is healthy. More than that can actually strain your kidneys, as they simply have too much to filter, even if it is dilute.
Also, constantly having a full bladder can cause continence problems.

Most people not under the influence of drugs should be able to listen to their body - if you are thirsty, drink, if you feel sloshy, don't!

yes, u can, but if u are not used to drink alot( 2 liters or more)
then u will have to do it in stages, and thats by adding alittle more water to ur body everyday frequently, and the more water you drink, the more active u will feel, too much water isn harmful to your body at all, believe me, i keep drinknig till i feel that im about to throw up, and thats when i know that i have to stop< lol >

In the gym, if you drink too much water, you start to wash out essential salts and can cause yourself damage. For a healthy person with no kidney problems, it is quite difficult to drink too much, but it is possible. People have been known to die after taking in huge amounts of water

YES. There have been cases of death from drinking water. In extreme cases by drowning {check?}, but also by leaching out minerals in the body. This is usually associated with previous fluid loss, or rarely in conjunction with not eating . I think you have to drink a lot of water normally though.

Yes you can. (but you can't drown from it unless you inhale it rather than swallowing it). There were a few cases in the UK some years ago of teenager clubbers who drank too much water whilst they were on "E". Apparently it overloads the liver.

YOUR BODY WILL NOT LET YOU....drink too much water, you will expel it.

Drinking too much water can ONLY kill you if you try to keep it inside, which can cause your bladder to burst. This happened to a lady who was attempting to win a Nintendo Wii on a contest. She drank so much water that she died of "water poisoning" since she did NOT go to the bathroom when she needed to very badly.
