Try reading the Bookseller of Kabul - it sheds a lot of light on what is and isn't allowed and what myths are and aren't true! Off the top of my head it says that the Taliban are not overly keen on educating women but for very specific reasons - its a good read and sheds a lot of light on what can be a very shady subject.

As I have heard and read about 'Taliban'
though some of the islamic concepts are not clear to them and they can not be advocated for every of their doings
but
they are not against education of women
rather
they are against co-education which is not allowed in Islam
with the reason that
co-education of opposite sexes may lead to sexual abuses and pre marriage sexual relations which is strictly prohibited in Islam as well as all religions.
They advocate separate institutions for both male and female. So is the case in employments.
I never read anywhere that Islam stops women to get education
rather
Islam calls it a duty of every male and female Muslim to get education.
If
we observe something like this at individual level we can call it misunderstanding of Islam by that individual. We can't blame any religion for the wrong doing of any individual.
A religion, in my opinion, should be judged by its teachings and general attitude of its majority followers.

I think this is just a propaganda more than a reality
for certain reasons
and
to achieve certain goals.

The Taleban offer the strictest interpretation of Sharia law (Islamic law) ever seen in Muslim. This takes to meaning that after the age of eight women ceased to be educated, a lot of schools went underground, but faced bruital execution or public torture if they were found out.

Personally I find the medical issue for women under the strict taliban rule the hardest to swallow.

There is a heartbreaking movie called "Osama" that anyone interested in learning about the condition of women under the Taliban should see. It's about a widowed woman with a young daughter. She dresses her daughter as a boy (named Osama) so that she can work and go to school. So I would have to say yes, the Taliban frowns on women being educated. As to why, it seems obvious that their power directly depends on the ignorance of all the people they govern.

Ultimately , the reason the Taleban closed schools to females is that in their world view, there is nothing that will be useful to an adult woman that can be learnt in school.
Her role is to be modest, look after the home and children. This doesn't require education.
In fact, education makes it harder for these women to be satisfied with their allotted role, and is therefore disruptive to the 'correct' functioning of society as Allah likes.

Progressive women in Afghanistan (when the Taleban was in power) were violently penalised - stonings for showing ones arms etc, all because that government felt they were disrupting the divine order of things.
As a theocracy, they didn't have any time for alternative religious views, or the idea that society progresses (If it does, that's evidence of corruption and getting farther fron God you see)

A kind view, is they were trying to make sure they all got to heaven, or perhaps they were just deeply ingrained misogynists.

I believe the Taliban do stop women and girls getting an education. Bet it's because they know women are smarter, and will see through them. - laugh
