How big is the train? Passenger or freight, how many HP in the Loco, is the train even deisel powered? How fast is it going? Is it uphill or down, is the engineer a hot-rodder or an old grandma? All these things and more effect consumption.
And if you are really worried,keep in mind it is by far the most efficient way for you to travel in terms of fuel consumption short of walking or bicycling, and the trains is going to run whether you are on it or not so just go and stop worrying about it.
