Some animal shelter workers actually do take some of the animals home. Some people get too emotionally involved and end up being a part of the problem instead of part of the solution. One lady, who was a volunteer, had 178 animals removed from her home when she could no longer care for them. She did not mean any harm and wanted to save them but all it really did was the problem worse because the shelter had to deal with 178 animals at once. Many had to be euthanized because they were sick or injured.
I have deep admiration for those who do volunteer. It's a tough job and I am not sure I could handle it. I'd want to bring them all home too but no one can save them all. All we can do is save one at a time and keep on educating those who simply do not understand that the world does not need more unwanted puppies and kittens.

Simple logic. You can't save them all. No matter how cute and sweet they are.
If you took them all home they'd be in the same situation as the shelter - crammed into kennels and not getting enough one-on-one time with humans. It's virtually impossible to give enough attention to that many animals.
Many people who "hoard" or "bunch" animals are the ones that "fall in love" with every animal and bring them home. Then they get in over their heads and you see them on the news when the police raid their home and find 30 dogs, 40 cats, and 25 dead animals on the property.
You have to know your limits, do what you can, accept the things you can't change, and remember that the ones that don't make it out alive were at least loved by you in the end.

I have many fosters come to my home for various reasons, but luckily I don;t have to go to the shelter very often.
I actually was going to keep a foster puppy that was born to my foster om I have right now, but sadly little Grace passed away.
I have to keep telling myself the more I keep the less I can help. My home is not huge so I can only have sop many.
Seeing as I also do home visits before a dog in my care is placed in a forever home I know where they go is a wonderful place for them to be so that makes it easier too.
I do have 4 dogs and 3 cats of my own.
I should also add that over the years yes many have stayed. I'm sure more will too.

Very good question in my book. I've thought & wanted to work at the local Humane Society for years, but I know I would feel the same way. Seeing those sad eyes would be pulling at my heart strings & I don't think I could just turn my back on them.I'd no doubt be standing at death door ( not wanting any to be euthanized).

I used to work in a shelter. You bust your hump to save as many as you can and hustle for rescue. Still all your family and friends end up with dogs. You usually do too.
Bless your heart for Volunteering. You'll start saving dogs too! LOL

It is sad... I hate going to the SPCA because of that.. I would totally take home a couple, train them up, and find really awesome homes for them. Gah. Some people tick me off... but.. what can ya do.

Well in Australia at RSPCA, there's a program where you take home puppies and train and take of them until they are old enough for adoption!
