It depends on the context. If he just asks for a regular picture of you, no it's probably not illegal. If he is asking for you to take naked pictures of yourself or "sexy" pictures of you, then yes it is very illegal. Either way, it is very creepy for him to care what you look like at all.

You asked about this man before and everyone told you to cease all contact with this man. Stop asking questions like this and don't speak to the man anymore.

You might not understand it now. But this guy is unbelievably weird to be carrying on long conversations with 12 year olds online. Do not tell him your name, parents name, address, phone number, school or anything. In fact, like I said, stop talking to him now before something horrible happens to you.

Is it illegal for a 26 year old woman to be chatting to a 12 year old boy for over a year?

Not illegal.

Not knowing anything about the guy, his intentions, or what is being discussed I'm reluctant to label him a 'child predator' or a pedophile.

It's a little strange to have a year+ relationship with a 12 year old at that age, so I'd definitely be wary of the situation.

Be aware that if he is a predator, if he knows what school you go to and what you look like he has all he needs to know to identify you or whoever he is chatting with. That could lead to trouble.

These people do look for tidbits of info that ultimately give them the info they need to do whatever they plan on doing.

If it is you that is chatting with this person, I'd definitely suggest never again responding to this person, and probably changing your online identity.

Illegal if it is sexually oriented. Really no reason for a 26 year old man to be "chatting" with a 12 year old girl in my eyes.

I don't know about legality, but it is INCREDIBLY unwise for a 12 year old girl to be chatting with a 26 year old man online.
1. A normal 26 year old man would know that it is wrong and stupid, besides, to be having ANY kind of relationship with a 12 year old girl, even an online relationship. This fellow is what is known as a predator. He is looking for an innocent little girl to take advantage of.

2. If the 12 year-old girl provides this fellow with a picture of herself, she has just set herself up to be kidnapped. The guy has already siphoned all kinds of info from you, and now he will know what you look like.

3. Please, please, please.... for the sake of YOUR safety, DO NOT SEND THIS PERSON YOUR PHOTO.

Please, please... stop communicating with this person altogether. He is up to no good. I promise you.

I do not think it is illegal, but I think it is sickening. What could a 26 year old possibly have in common with a 12 year old?

No, it is not illegal but you should leave her alone anyway.

Find an adult to play with and encourage her to chat with someone closer to 12!

This is a RED FLAG.

The legality of the issue does not matter; alert the police Now and let them do their thing; the guy is bad news probably, may be on probation, may be in violation of probabtion terms by event using the internet or talking to the girl, go after him and do not concern yourself with whether it is legal or not for him to "talk" with her. let the police sort it out.

Why would you want to chat to some one who is more than half your age?????? then to ask for her picture, that sounds a bit worrying to me.

No. But I am reasonably certain his intentions are less than noble, and the girl should not encourage what may be bad behavior.
