My trusty little Remington typewriter has a special key that when depressed to its fullest extent makes a discrete and satisfying ‘click’ indicating that it has engaged into the position for the use of upper case letters (or to you BIG LETTERS). To reverse the process and engage lower case letters again (small letters) simply depress the same special key and another click will be heard. The lock is then released and the type bar returns to its normal position.

Last week I travelled by charabanc to Croydon Aerodrome with the intention of purchasing a ticket on Imperial Airways to Paris’s Orley Aerodrome. Of course I was accompanied by my faithful Remington writing machine, when the Imperial Airways security chappy instructed me to open the case and depress some of the keys. When I remonstrated with him he claimed that I could be a fanatical terrorist (really where do they get these terms and ideas from?) and insisted I depress a few keys to ensure that the platen was not impregnated with nitro-glycerin.

I was so taken aback that on board the Vickers Vimmy I had to pour a reviving cup of Earl Grey from a flask that my man servant had previously prepared.

Now then young man I assume you now know how to type in BIG LETTERS; because from the appalling lack of capitalization in your question you really need to know where that special key is, don’t you!

I press shift and then the letter, if i became typing an entire sentence in capitals i might use the caps lock in spite of the incontrovertible fact that it truly is lots less demanding to easily use the shift button for unusual capitals :)
