My dad has to get out of jury service as he has his own business as a tattoo artist and cannot afford to take a couple of weeks off to complete it. Can anyone tell me anything to help him get out of it because this isn't working!!!

Say you have a criminal record; you're on the sex offenders list..

If you go for the illness excuse - make it "back trouble" - complain of terrible sciatic nerve pain. Very difficult for anyone to prove you don't have a back problem (he won't be able to sit for the hours needed to sit through a Hearing and the deliberations after). Read a medical book which will describe the symptoms of a prolapsed disc or problems with a sacro-illiac joint.

Turn up in a dark suit, white shirt and tie, wearing glasses and with a copy of the Daily Telegraph under your arm. (Preferably open on the "hanging's too good for them" page). You'll get sent home straight away.

In your Dad's case, just don't show up and be prepared to pay the £400 fine.

He can defer it till his business is quieter, but he can't avoid it. He will get paid while he does it - he just have to fill in a form and the money comes through quite quickly. He still has to turn up though!

He can just not show up and pay the fine. Chances are even if he goes he won't get called. If he does, most cases are over in two or three days.

I thought that they paid you for any loss of earnings related to jury service.

Yes they will defer you. Normally they just put you back in the random list. they don't just set another time. Its like a drawing. Never knows who's name will be picked.GL

i thought if you were Jury bound you had to do it - unless you knew the persons involved in the case - or were genuinly ill -or worked for the Police itself - i also thought jury servers got paid expenses and wage loss earnings too -

Firstly, you dont get paid while your are doing it.

Well...you do, but it is minimal and probably wouldnt cover his loses if he runs his own business.

Best thing to do is get a doctors note (stress comes to mind, as you could fake it, not like a broken arm)
