I think it's true. It reminds me of the whole big-fish-small pond thing. But I suppose there are some extraordinary people who transcend that, who wish to be more than what their friends are and what they expect -- people who want to be big fish in big ponds. That's how history is made.
Good writers can always notice things about people that the rest of us can't.
