It is a great human weakness to wish to be the same as our
friends. If they are rich, we wish to be rich. If they are poor, then we don't mind being equally poor.We are not ashamed of being stupid,we are only ashamed of being more stupid than our friends. It is a matter of comparison.

I think it's true. It reminds me of the whole big-fish-small pond thing. But I suppose there are some extraordinary people who transcend that, who wish to be more than what their friends are and what they expect -- people who want to be big fish in big ponds. That's how history is made.
Good writers can always notice things about people that the rest of us can't.

It is correct.

Had Og the caveman been content to be just as cold, wet, and miserable as his neighbor, we'd have never mastered Fire.

In order for civilization to advance, someone has to be able to imagine and want more than has yet been seen or achieved.

He's basically describing Complacency, and Complacency is certainly a weakness.
