You didn't say what your overall body fat ratio was.
are you generally overweight all over? if so then the advice given was good- cardio fitness and diet.
If its just your belly you need to be aware that first you cannot spot reduce fat.
and for women I think it can be a problem because if you loose to much body fat , your bust goes and possibly that nice shaply bottom- I personally don't want to be flat as pancake stick thin!
Pilates is very good at toning your 'core' as you possibly may need to look at your posture too.
Pilates teaches you to support inwardly the waist muscles as opposed to gettin stuck right in with some of those other (very challenging) ab stuff, if you ain't very strong to start with your going to develop pushing out stomach muscles and possibly weaken your back ( keeping it non technical here on purpose) and cause further problems.
so yep- don't do 1000s crunches- its not effective. its all about correct technique- Have a one to one session with a Pilates instructor with a good reputation -
I was interested in the one about too long in the intestines? is that true?
test to see if you have a food allergy to see if anythings causing bloating.
I also study alot on the emotions stored within the body- some forms of stress can cause you to store fat here. or stress can cause bloating/sluggish movement in the intestines.
So you need to be clearer is it a layer of fat you can get hold of or is it bloating and pushing out of the stomach (or a bit of both)
surgery? who knows- how much does it bother you?
I heard there were injections now (instead of liposuction arghh!) were it just dissolves away the fat! anybody know about that one?
shame that we have so many hang ups and dissatisactions and lack of love of our own bodies- perhaps they (our body) might respond better if we just start loving them and enjoying them.
(thats my hippie stuff out the way!)
and I'm workin on it!

Basically you may have intestines that are too long so that they take up a lot of space. The situation is exacerbated when they are also filled with food. You could have the guts shortened by surgery and, to help further, make sure you are very regular in emptying - like daily. Cut down also on any foods that produce gas as it can bloat your tummy. Exercise then will strengthen your stomach muscles to hold the lot in. Without reducing the space, you can't do it. It's just like trying to close an overfull suitcase.

Abdominal exercises (and exercisers) don't work because they only activate the surface layer of the muscles that affect the shape of your midriff.
To get rid of a 'pot belly' you need to work the deeper abdominal muscle layers. These are used to twist your waist, to support your breathing, and to adjust your posture.
Some kinds of dance help to tighten these, because they are used a lot in doing the dancing. Salsa and Samba use them intensively for 'wiggling' the hips, and Capoeira involves all sorts of twisting and turning movements, so it gives your belly a very effective workout.
Pilates classes will teach you how to selectively activate each layer of your abdominal muscles, and to do work that will improve their condition while you're doing other things (standing, sitting, walking, can all be done in a way that helps you to reduce your belly). They will also allow you to unite the work that your back and abdominal muscles are doing, so that your entire WAIST will function better, and help to improve your digestion, breathing, posture, fitness, and body-image.

First, keep a food journal EVERYTHING look at what you really eat every day.... then change some stuff around and see what effects you where. Cardo!!!! It helps and doing exercise right! try bicycle crunches...elbow to knee crunches...you know at a slow pace at frist really take your time and make sure your back is flat and your tummy is pulled in. Pull your navel to the floor! BREATH it helps with weight loss....Do not do 1000000 crunches do 10-20 a night slow and right leg lifts lie on your back and do sisors do not touch your feet down keep about 2 inches above the floor when letting your legs down...remember slow Hold the legs of the bed and use your tummy to lift your legs up over your head and use it to let them back down not your arms!!! Big belly is associated with the middle-aged due to hormonal change.
You're not middle-aged......
I suspect it could be the exercise you're doing and the food you're eating.
To get rid off fat in the belly, you need to:
1. Do cardio exercise - at least 3-4 times per week, for at least 45 mins per session. This exercise cranks up your metabolic rate to burn off body fat from your entire body, so that includes fat in your belly too
2. Strength-train with weights - at least 3-4 times per week, for at least 15 mins per session. This exercise helps to boost muscle growth. Since muscles are metabolically active, the more muscles you develop, the higher your metabolic rate and hence the more body fat you burn
3. Eat a well-balanced, healthy, weight loss nutritious diet that banks on lots of fruits & vegges, fiber, moderate carbohydrates, lean protein and good fat and drink plenty of water.
This kind of diet is to make sure that your calorie input is less than your calorie output from exercise, so you lose weight.

Lower abdominal workouts will help you. This pot belly may be due to intake of alcohol which makes the intestinal walls to swell. Limit or quit the habit. pilates are great to tighten and tone those problem areas. Is not genetics.

what kind of exercise have you been doing? i hope not sit ups?! (they only build more muscle underneath the layer of fat, they dont burn any fat so makes belly look bigger)
you have to do cardio 4-6 times a week for average of 45min to burn fat - you cant spot reduce body fat and cardio burns it all over your body - you will see it first in places where fat layer is the thinnest (e.g. your face) and you will see last on places where its the thickest (your belly). those are running, jogging, swimming, hiking, cycling, rope jumping, elliptical etc.
also eating small meals every 2-3 hours will optimize your metabolism.
