Any single malt will do. Much smoother than the Scotch blended and rye IE jack d or Jim bean. The further North you go with the malt IE higher up in Scotland it was made the more peaty it tastes. The only thing you put into a malt is water that comes from the area it was made and only 50% of the amount of malt. Malt Whiskey is drank neat. Darwinnie, Scappa, Java are three good ones or you could stay with Glenfiddich, Glenmorangie, craggonmore.

For the money, I would recomend Dewar's White Label. I have always found it to be a smooth not too strongly smokey Scotch. The price is close to Chivas( crap), often a little less.
Scotch is a treat for me so I usually spend a little more and get Lavulin(sp) a very good single malt.
For bourbon I go with Weller. 107 proof and 7 yr. old, serve cold and sip it slow. With a Padron cigar.

Balentines makes a real nice whiskey. It is what I cut my teeth on. You can't go wrong with Black.
For single malt Glenmorangie has several options to choose from that are moderately priced.
I do offer this advice. Save up to buy a bottle of Blue. It is without a doubt the the best I have ever had. It is worth the money. I only bring it out for special occasions, so it lasts about a year for me.

If you don't want to spend a lot, then avoid Scotch and drink Bourbon or Canadian Whiskey. Evan Williams, Jim Beam, and Seagram's VO Gold are good and relatively inexpensive. Be sure to get something that's been aged at least 8 years.

LOL I was going to say the SAME thing, Black Label. I drank a ton of the stuff last night, and was laughing at everything.

Jameson, Irish Whisky would be good due to it's character.
It's smooth and gently matured.
