Being in love means you want a relationship with someone, loving someone means you care about him/her very very much. You can love someone without being in love, but you can't be in love with someone if you don't love him/her. Case in point, a girl might break up with me, even though she does love me, because she is not in love with me anymore. This means she still cares deeply for me, but she no longer wants a relationship.

Well, I'm not a guy, but you "love" your family, friends, etc. Being "in love" is a totally different feeling, being totally infatuated, and reserved for a love interest. Such as you may "love" your ex for the part they played in your life, but are no longer "in love" with them.

I think "I love you" and "I'm in love with you" are basically the same things. Usually you'll hear "I'm in love with you" more in the beginning.

I always hate it when guys shorten it to "I luv u." I don't know, it just sort of cheapens it.

Two different definitions, One is the love for family which is not sexual at all. The other is the love for your girlfriend or boyfriend or wife or husband which is being in love. You can love somebody meaning you really care for them and not be in love with them too.

Well its a differance in the way you really feel. Being in love is a feeling inside that all you do is with your partner. I love you is you have feelings and that person is important but no majical chemistry to want to be with forever

well words mean nothing if your actions dont back it up..
but I assume this might explain.. You love your mom, but you are not "in love" with her..
maybe it means the type of love.. family and friendship love is a more of an endearing strong need of companionship, without lust.. "being in love" is more reserved for a partner. life a spouce or lover..
(just my interpretation)

Nothing really, but people put meaning to it so they can use it as an excuse not to try to hurt someone's feelings. It's like saying I'm not your friend, I'm just your acquaintance.

Nothing.
'I love you, but I'm not in love with you" is a nice way for a woman to say to the guy that she doesn't love him anymore.

I love my mom, my friends, my kids and everybody else. Being in love is when you are "head over hills for your man", but after a while it might just feel like love. capisci? :-)
