My mom is starting a new job really soon and my dad has a job that pays $600 a week. We just bought a new house and we have to pay morgage and everything still. I'm 14 years old and I really want allowance. I have 3 other sisters who ALSO want allowance. They are 12, 9, and 7 years old. I haven't gotten any new clothes at all this summer and I'm mad about it b/c I'm wearing the same FEW clothes I had from last yr. I want to get allowance and my mom is condsidering it. Is there a chart you have that my family and I can use?

ex. of what I prefer:
1 load of laundry (washed, dryed, folded, put away)= $ ??

Please don't say anything like, "You're too young to get allowance." or "You should do it because you guys are a family." I make my bed and that stuff everyday, but when I do extra I haven't gotten anything in return really. PLEASE HELP!!!

I don't thin you are too young for allowance. However, I think you're 7, 9, and 12-year-old sisters are.

You say your mom is considering giving you an allowance, so you're on the right track!

I'm afraid there's no accurate allowance "chart" to go by. It will all depend on your parents' income and expenses. Whatever they can afford is simply whatever they can afford. I'm SURE they'd love to be able to give you everything, but unfortunately, budget may not allow that.

As for new clothes........
If your mom can't afford to take you shopping right now, why don't you try sharing/borrowing clothes from your sister(s) or friends? That way you'll have something new (to you) to wear!

I would sit down with your mom and see what she thinks the chores are worth. Sit down and write a list of all the chores that need to be done weekly....you could even include babysitting your 3 sisters as a "job." I'm sure she would appreciate being given some time off - being a mom is a 24 hour a day job that usually does NOT come with pay or gratitude. Try to agree on something together. If that doesn't work, ask her if she would allow you to do chores for trusted neighbors for cash. You're 14 and that's usually the age that many girls begin babysitting for trusted friends and neighbors for extra cash. There are usually great certificate programs and workshops you can take from the YMCA and local hospitals on babysitting, child CPR, etc. These types of workshops help parents feel more confident in leaving their children in your care.

Children should have allowances in order to teach them the responsiblility of how to use their money wisely. Those allowances should be based on the age of the child. A 7 year old will not need as much as a 14 year old, for example.

The way we handled it was that every child had a list of their duties for the week. A certain amount was deducted for every duty not completed. Any additional chores were done as instructed by our parents. Our parents assigned them by ability of age, not according to equal amounts. The older the child, the harder and sometimes more plentiful the chores. If we refused to do any additional chore, we lost 1/2 of our allowance, even if we completed our regular duties. .

I have an idea. Each of you can take turns doing a job.

ex. one night you can wash the dishes and then the next night one of the others can wash the dishes.

you could do it in a rotation type thing.

If you wash 2 loads of clothes washed, dried, folded and put away shouldd pay up to about $6.00

washing dishes is about 3$

taking out the trash is about 2$

cleaning the bathroom shoul be about 2$

This is how we do it at my house.(i am 12)
if you do the chores 2 out of 7 days, you should get approximately $26.00 a week.

If you need anymore help email me

Could you try getting some babysitting jobs? Maybe you could ask around your neighborhood to see if anyone has chores, like cleaning out garages, that they're willing to pay you for. It sounds like your parents' money is really tight, or they would have bought you the things you want already. If you do get an allowance or money from other jobs, try buying stuff at the thrift store to make your money last.

Punkin' have you got food in your plate,a roof over yer head and a comfortable place to sit and watch TV? Then doing laundry, washing dishes and generally cleaning up after yourself is payment enough. Now You are 14, right? Go to the neighbor's and see what jobs they have for you ? Cutting grass, babysitting, window washing.dog walking, etc,etc Go there to earn "Money Honey"! Helping out around the house is what ya do. OK, suppose you are 19 yrs old and on your own with your own apt. who is going to pay you to clean your own place?

Supporting a family of 5 on $600/week is no easy task. When it comes to allowances it really just depends on what your parents can afford.

I think it would be better for your parents to set an amount each week and have required chores. If they set prices on chores, they could end up paying out more than they can afford. Having specific chores for each child and an amount paid (based on age even) allows them to set the limits.
