Lets see I'm paying $120 for each center piece at my wedding reception and the flowers are mine to kepp after the reception is done. I can eigther have the place throw the flowers away or have my guest and family take the flowers home since they are so beautiful and fresh flowers.

I think people take them home because at the end of the day the purpose of the flower is done for the reception so people can have them instead of them going to waste.

Most brides and grooms will encourage guests to take them. Usually they will tell the oldest female at the table or something like that. If you leave them behind the reception location will just throw them away anyway.

Well, usually the couple has nowhere to use that big number of arrangements - they may take one home, and give one to each of their family members. Often, there is some sort of draw or something from guests sitting at the table to see who will take home the centerpiece.

People love getting things for free -- especially things like flowers from weddings. It's like they feel like it's a bonus for the time and energy they spent coming to the wedding.

I'd rather a person took them home and had a few days enjoyment from having fresh flowers in their home than them being chucked in the bin straight away.

Usually the couple gives them away to someone at each table. What would you do with 20 centerpieces? They give them away so someone can enjoy them before they die. My mom loves getting the centerpieces from weddings. She puts them on her table.
