Yes the Mustang is a very reliable car!
For the second year in a row, the Mustang was the highest-ranked vehicle in the Midsize Sporty Car segment of J.D. Power and Associates Initial Quality Survey (IQS). The report measures problems per 100 (pp100) vehicles as reported by customers after having driven their new vehicles for three months.
Fords long term reliability is above average too.
Here are the last 2years J.D. Powers Vehicle Dependability studies ( 2007 results will be published next month)

And Fords quality is on par with the Japanese manufacturers.

If you live in an area where there is snow , I would also recommend that you get the optional Traction Control.
Even if you never get snow the TC is helpfull on wet pavement too.

Reliability is average, at best. Initial quality means it holds up well for the 1st year or so of ownership (as all cars damn well better), but after that all bets are off. Mustangs have a decent track record as the technology in them is pretty old and most of the design bugs have been worked out.
This is a pretty crude car, that gets a lot of mileage out of being so called "retro". Ford put comparatively little money into the design, so they have decided to call a crude, already technologically obsolete car "retro". So far they have gotten away with it. Since you are a new driver, you will not know any better. The V6 is loud and unrefined, but it feels pretty fast, so that helps. The interior is a sea of tupperware grade plastic, but again, having not driven a nice luxury car, you will not know any better. For all intensive purposes you will be happy with the car. You will wish you got the V8 of course, but you can add a few items to V6 to pep it up.
I would factor in one more thing, insurance. Mustangs are very expensive to insure, even the V6 versions.

Consumers rates them as poor, the V6 engine is ok, poor fit and finish, poor interior, rattles, harsh ride from the rear axle, very poor winter performance, there are many better choices.
