SK: I believe Rick Warren in the book is relating this to you, from the stand-point, that your being present in church is a gesture of worship towards God. Remember; spiritual growth is a very, very, very, S-L-O-W p r o c e s s and God's Holy Spirit relates to each individual in its own particular way. I, personally, have asked people after the church service was over, what the sermon was about. I received numerous different answers - none wrong but all relative. Great question, SK !!! Hope I answered this appropriately enough for you. Good luck !!!

Always follow up what you hear in a sermon with checking it out for yourself in scripture.
It might be that the reason some of what you hear doesn't make sense because it really doesn't make sense.....
Or it might just be an area of understanding you need to grow in.
Acts 17:11
Now the Bereans were of more noble character than the Thessalonians, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true.
There is nothing more worshipful then seeking His truth.
Seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness and all other things will be added.

I couldn't get into that book I still have it, some parts were good
I would go on to another one I think
Worship and the sermon are for you, you do worship God but you receive from God, that is why you go
Take note, jot down the scriptures and the different points he makes and then go read it for yourself
Blessings

I too have heard people say that worship (in the going to church sense) is for God...not for us...and I disagree. Churches were created by man...not by God. Worship is not merely actions taken once a week by listening to a sermon etc. That is religion talking...not God.
Worship is an ongoing and constant personal relationship with our Creator God. It is recognizing that He alone is the source of all things. It is based on trust and on love.

I think the point Rick Warren is trying to make is that if you go to church mainly to be entertained, wanting the sermon to be full of funny jokes and cute stories then you are not approaching it with the right attitude. However, to say that you don't understand something, or have questions is really a fuller way of engaging with what's going on. It's ok to not understand, and to have questions, even to disagree.

I have to say that you just hit something in me.
I have not gotten that far in the Purpose Driven Life but my Husband and I have recently been talking about our Pastor and how we feel that his sermons are boring and, like you, we are not getting anything out of this.
I will be looking for some advice and answers on this...
God Bless You!!!

You need to read page 63 again. Then go back to page 66 .God created us! We should want to please Him in whatever we do! That's worship! You are worshipping God now! By seeking answers about Him! You and I can read the same verse in the Bible.Yet ,God will reveal to each of us something different.Because ,we each have our own relationship with God! God wants us to understand His Word.As we read the Bible more and Study it .He will reveal what we need to know ! Look up the verses ,Mr.Warren has quoted in the Bible and discuss it with your family!Always cross reference the Bible.Call up a deacon of your church .Go to Bible Study ,that helps also! Pray, and ask God to help you understand His Word !

Haven't read the book, but the idea that everything is worship is found in christian mysticism and some buddhism as the quality of mindfulness. It can be quite powerful.

great question. If you didnt understand it and didnt care about undertanding it is not really worship. You are just attending church. It doesnt get you brownie points with God to just go to church. If you want to know and ask questions after trying to know on your own or through others or through prayer, that is still part of worship because you are giving glory to Him and desiring to know about Him and know what message He has for you.

I just opened my book to that chapter and reviewed what it says...
what it means by everything we do is worship, is that we do it for God and to please him. we sing for his pleasure not because we like it, we learn about the bible for him not just to learn,ect... meaning that it's more than to fill a void for us, it's to make him happy to make us closer to him.
what he is referring to, in "i didn't get anything from worship today" is not whether you understand the preaching or not, is that if you liked it or enjoyed it or if you felt that it benefit you. in other words, you shouldn't expect to always like a type of song or to evangelize... me particular i don't like fast paced songs. i don't get anything out of them.... but they aren't for me they are for God and that's what really matters.
You attend church, not only to learn about God's word but also to obey him and please him. You have to understand the sermon for YOUR own spiritual growth... not for Gods. if you didn't understand something ask your pastor... obviously you can't apply it to your life if you don't understand it.
