It's just the way they are. Wildlife biologists can speculate, but unless they can speak Lion, it will only be speculation.

The reason is Africa is a very tough place to be an animal, even a lion. A male lion is like soldier .When there is no fighting to do, he looks lazy and is certainly a nuisance. When there is fighting to do, you need them around very badly.

For example male lions biggest job is scaring off other male lions, since if another takes over one of the first thigns they do is kill all the cubs in the pride, because they are not their kids.

Secondly is for protection against other species. hyaenas whilst not as powerful as a female lion can still bluff female lions into giving up kills since most animals are afraid of the power of a hyaenas bite.

A male lion is twice the size of a lioness, three times stronger, roars twice as loud and when he get involved with his big mane flying he can terrify and scatter a whole pile of hyaenas and send them packing by all by himself.

Whereas you will see even a group of 5 or 6 lionesses will generally not be able to do the same thing without a lot of fighting and risking injuries.

Lastly when food is very scarce lions are occasionally forced to attack game much larger than normal, which is risky and dangerous for them. Including full sized cape buffalo, crocodiles, rhinos and even elephants.

In this case the males are needed and do join in the hunting to hold or anchor the animals with their great strength while the females attack the throat or nose etc.

So yes they are lazy most of the time but once again in Africa life is tough, so its sort of like having mafia in your street. You pay him protection money by feeding him, and he takes care of the other bad guys from time to time!

Well, not every male lion lives with a group of lionesses. Some male lions stay together and hunt together until one finds a mate or kills off a group of male lions who have lionesses.

I've seen this on many learning channels programs.

Also, just a guess.... the male lion protects the young when the female goes off hunting

Mother nature made it so that the female did all the hunting and raising of the kids. If a male lion is on his own, he will not be lazy because he has to eat.
