Probably depends on the State, but in New York you have to have a 4 year Degree.
Criminal Justice is a good major.

You have to take a Civil Service test and obtain a good score. It depends on how many jobs are available during the time the list is valid.
In other words, if you do not get a high score and they have many applicants refuse the job and go down the list and get to your name, then you will get an interview.

I believe that being a probation officer requires a certification or degree. No felonies. Drug-free. etc. Look it up on the Occupational Outlook Handbook website. They have it all, job description, required training, pay, future job outlook, and organizations. Best of luck!

Check your phone book for both County and State Human Resources Departments.
Probation may fall into either level.
